Warriors Overcome 12 Point Deficit To Defeat Crown Cagers 67 To 64 MCHS Varsity Wrestling Warriors Lose, But Improve Records PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. nKCEMBEfc'h. 1*70 By Dick Rabbitt 0h yes, the Fighting Wfrriors of Ken Ludwig t lived up to their name Friday night as they defeated the Crown Vikings at Crown in a thriller 67 to 64. The Warriors battled back from a 12 pt. deficit to knock tlje defending co-champs iflio the cellar of the Fox V&lley with a 0 and 2 record. Tl^e Warriors remain on top of the heap along with Crystal Lake South and r Dundee each with a 2 and 0 linarkV'. \ [:-t Bobby Zeller's two pointer tied the game at 2 all at the j?:00 mark of the initial period, and from then on it '1^416 a struggle for our Warriors. With the Viking ofljtpse cracking the Warrior press and guard Kevin Kepp feeding the big , fellow Gary Gliesman, along with hitting from the outside the Vikings led at the ' quarter 22 to 18. Zeller, i'^Greve and Jensen along with Barry Anderson kept the Warriors in the game with their outside shooting. In the second' period the Vikings looked as if they were going to run the Warriors out of the gym as they continued to beat the Warrior press so that at the 1:48 mark they led by 12, 40 to 28. Glosson, Anderson and Jim Johnson cut the margin to 8 and the Warriors trailed 42 to 34 at the intermission. After some words of wisdom by Coach Ludwig, the Warriors looked like a new team. Taking off the press, the Warriors began to pick away at the Viking lead, with Bob Greve hitting from the outside, and Zeller and Johnson getting the layups, the Warriors narrowed the margin, until they trailed 54 to 50 going into the final period. In the final eight minutes the Warriors showed character as well as good basketball ability. It wasn't until guard Len Jensen's 20 footer hit the bottom of the net with 4:26 remaining that the Warriors tied the game at 56 all. Bobby Zeller's layup put the Warriors ahead 58 to 56, and then Kevil Kepp hit a 15 footer to tie it up. \ HUSTLE PAYS OFF With 2:15 remaining in the wm game Bob Greve and Gilesman a 6'5" center of Crown had a jump ball. With the tip going astray, none other than McHenry's Barry Anderson scrambled and got the possession for the Warriors. You would think that the senior Anderson was playing safety as he hustled to gain the ball for the Warriors. The Warriors took the opportunity as Bob GreVe was fouled and made one of the two charity tosses to put the Warriors in the lead for the first time. Zeller's layup gave the Warriors a three point margin. After a Crown basket, Johnson again gave the local crew a three point lead, and after Kepp's basket narrowed the margin, with 28 seconds remaining, Bobby Zeller made a turn around jump shot under the basket that was a beauty to behold to knot the Warrior victory. WARRIORS ARRIVE It was a great win for the Warriors. To defeat Crown at Crown has to be quite an accomplishment. The Warriors for the first time this season played as a team. They passed, they dribbled, they shot, and they played defense when it counted, together as a five man squad. In my opinion it took them five games to get it altogether, but after their fine play Friday night, they made a believer not only of me, but of the loyal fans who saw the game. If they con tinue to play the brand of basketball they displayed at Crown, we Warrior fans are going to be mighty happy as the season progresses. Warriors, it was a job well done. Coming back from a 12 pt. deficit was a tough task. Talking, to Coach Ludwig after the game he com mented, "We proved that we could come back", and added "we showed patience, but Crown is a good ball club although they are now 0 and 2 in the conference." In talking of the future, the popular coach said, "we have to be considered for the title, although it is a long way to February, we hope to make our mark this season". On Friday evening at West Campus the wrestlers fell to Crown 11-43 in their first conference match of the season. In a non-conference dual against Stevenson on Saturday, the local mat men fell 13-40. McHenry forfeited two weight classes in each match, which gave, their opposing teams an easy 12 points. In addition a number of varsity wrestlers are on the injury list and junior varsity wrestlers are being moved up to fill the vacancies. Senior Bruce Brda won both his matches on decisions, increasing his season record to 6-0. Dave Ramer, also a senior, brought his record up to 3-2-1 with two wins. In spite of a mouth injury, senior Mark Betancourt topped his crown opponent with a 9-0 major decision. Stitches kept him off the mat Saturday, so his record stands at 3-1-1. Juniors Brian Wrona and Vic Betancourt each split their two matches and now have 5-1 and 4-2 records respectively. The Junior Varsity wrestlers squeeked past Crown 33-32 and pinned down Stevenson 30-0. Butch Sanchez pinned both his opponents in 2:23 and 1:47. Scott Schmidt quickly pinned his men in 52 and 18 seconds, claiming the fastest fall for McHenry wrestlers so far this season. Pins were also scored by Scott Zim merman (1:53), Joe Mullen (:20) and Mike Connors (3:59). Dan Clark won a 12-5 decision over his Crown opponent. The Freshman mat men lost 12-52 to Crown on Friday. A combined Frosh- Soph team bounced back to a PAGE 7 48-30 win over Stevenson on Saturday. Two quick pins in 50 and 31 seconds were scored by John Clewis. Falls were also earned by Mike Connors (:41), Vern Keefer (4:41), Eric Karpinski (1:24) and Mitch Ketchum (:20). Friday the Wrestling Warriors travel to Crystal Lake South for their second conference match. The varsity will wrestle at Jacobs on Saturday in an eight team tournament. The Frosh-Soph team will also be in an eight team tournament at Wauconda. Wrestling at both tourneys begins at 9 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m. VARSITY RESULTS McHenry 11 - Crown 43 98 lbs., McHenry forfeited. 105 lbs., McHenry for feited. 112 lbs., Pat Haderly lost by a pin. 119lbs., Matt Ketchum lost by a 11-2 decision. 126 lbs., Brian Wrona lost by a 5-2 decision. 132 lbs, Bruce Brda won by an 8-4 decision. 138 lbs., Vic Betancourt lost by a 6-3 decision. 28 8 64 18 16 16 17 67 22 20 12 10 64 iBEfc'12. 145 lbs., Dav Raft&r won by a l(M) major decision. 155 lbs., Mark Betancourt won by a 9-0 major decision. 167 lbs., Bob Roewer lost by an 18-2 decision. 185 lbs., Tom Ketchum lost by a pin. Mike Burgdorf led the scoring with 17 pts., and Aric Akins led the team in rebounding. Coach Wirtz cleared the bench early in the final period showing mercy on the Saxon five. LOSE TWO On Friday night after a t h i r d q u a r t e r r a l l y t h a t pulled within two points, the young Warriors hit a cold spell in the final period to drop a Fox Valley encounter to Crown 57 to 50. The Warriors in reality lost the game in the second period, when turnovers by the many let the youn^ Vikes jump out to a 31 to 18 lead at the half. The Warriors literally ran out of gas in the final quarter. Wes Kopsell led the offense with 19 pts., and Wes: along with Dave Smith snared 13 rebounds apiece. On Saturday the sophomores lost to Grant by the score of 51 to 39. It was just a matter of the taller more talented Bulldogs overpowering the smaller Warriors. The Warriors were in the game until midway in the final period when Wes Kopsell fouled out, and the Warriors were unable to control the board after his dismissal.
