The hearing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dundee room of Ramada Inn, 500 W. River Road, Elgin. All property owners of dams or persons living near dams, and those dealing with the construction and maintenance of dams are encouraged to attend the hearing. Illinois has over 4,000 dams on its rivers, lakes and streams. While these dams provide water supply, recreation and navigation benefits, they all have a potential for endangering life and causing economic loss should they fail. For this reason, Congress, in 1975, passed the National Dam Safety Inspection act, which directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to in- Hotpoint Cooking Demonstration Saturday December 15 10 AM to 2 PM AT Lee & Ray Electric 1005 N. Front St . - McHenry 385-0082 ventory all dams and to inspect "high hazard potential dams". In Illinois, the Division of Water Resources, through its Dam Safety program, has prepared a set of Rules for Construction and Main tenance of Dams which stipulate the procedures the division will follow for in specting dams and regulating their construction and maintenance, in cooperation with the corps' program. •, The proposed rules have been published in the Illinois Register. In addition, two public hearings were held earlier this month, one in Springfield Nov. 6 and one in Chicago Nov. 8. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of the rules can write Illinois Depart ment of Transportation, Division of Water Resour ces, Dam Safety Program, 2300 South Dirksen Park way, Room 010, Springfield, 111., 62764. Written comments may be forwarded to the same address any time until Jan. 18, 1980. * * * * There is some differ ence between the appear ance of fairness and the intent to be fair.
