DECEMBER 14, 1878 •V Grand Old Man Of The NBA / • - • • % • * • '* • Eddie Gottlieb, who coached the Philadelphia Warriors to the first world championship when the Na tional Basketball Associa tion (NBA) was formed in 1946 is now in his 80's and still an active force in the NBA. Born in Russia, Gottlieb's family came to the United States when he was about four years old, living first in New Jersey and New York * City before moving to Phila delphia when he was 10. "My mother's family lived in Philadelphia and we moved there when my fa ther died," Gottlieb told a writer from The National Council on the Aging. "I've lived in Philadelphia ever since." Gottlieb went to high school and college in Phila delphia, participating in all _ sports, including basketball, during his school days. "When I got out of school I taught math for two tyears in grade school and physical education for two more in high school," Got- - tlieb said. "I also managed several athletic teams and played semi-pro basket ball." Gottlieb and a friend started semi-pro basketball and baseball teams in 1918 called the SPHA's (South Philadelphia Hebrew Asso- t ciation). "The baseball team lasted * only five years; the basket ball team was active until ; the 50's," Gottlieb recalled. When the NBA was cre ated in 1946, Gottlieb was hot only coach and general manager of its first world championship team, he was also a charter member of the league's board of gover nors, a post he held until 1967. In 1952, Gottlieb bought the Philadelphia Warriors : and quit coaching in 1954 to devote his time to the fep business side of a profes sional sports franchise as well as to NBA responsibili ties, including the league schedule. "I started working on the schedule in 1947 with Mau rice Podoloff, the first com missioner of the NBA," Gottlieb said. "We worked together for about six years and then I started doing the scheduling all by myself." It wasn't until three years ago that Gottlieb was given assistance in the person of George Faust. "This year George and I coordinated the schedule for the first time using a com puter," Gottlieb said proud ly. "We've been testing computers for the last 9 or 10 years but this is the first system we've found that meets our needs." Over the years, Gottlieb has been deeply involved in the evolution of the NBA. He has been a member of the rules committee in every league his team played in for more than 50 years and is presently a member of the competition and rules com mittee of the NBA. What does Gottlieb think about the brand of basket ball played today as op posed to when he started 61 years ago? "Today's game is much faster paced and much more interesting," Gottlieb said. "We're playing a better game--no one doubts that." As for the future, Gott lieb prefers to let that take care of itself. "I started in basketball in 1918," Gott lieb said. "Don't ask me how long I'll continue be cause I really couldn't say-- just put down that I don't have any plans for retiring at the present time." INFLATION CAUSED the largest cost of living in crease in social security benefits in history in July. Nearly 35 million recipients of social security and 4 mil lion persons receiving sup plemental security income received a 9.9 percent in crease in benefits. The costs of these increases in fiscal year 1980 alone will come to an estimated $10.6 bil lion. Criticism is a study by which men grow im portant and formid able at very small ex pense. •Samuel Johnson. Senior^ and disabled citizens ~ who have not already filed for Circuit Breaker tax relief for the 1978 claim year have only a few more days to apply with the state before the Dec. 31 deadline, according to James B. Zagel, director of the Dlinois Department of Revenue. Zagel said Circuit Breaker tax rebates are available to Illinois citizens with annual household incomes under $10,000 who are 65 or over or who are disabled. The rebated, provided under the state's Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief act, are designed to reduce the tax burden on senior and disabled citizens, who generally have fixed or restricted incomes. Under the program, property tax relief grants of up to $650 and additional grants of between $50 and $100 are available to qualified citizens, Zagel said. And, he added, an applicant does not need to a own his or her home. "You may rent your residence or even live in a nursing home and still qualify for one or both of these grants," he said. "So far this year, nearly 360,000 .persons have received grants for the 1978 claim year totaling nearly $82.7 million," Zagel noted. "This brings the total that senior and disabled persons have received through this program since its inception in 1972 to nearly $450 ' million." Application forms (111- 1365) are available from any Illinois Department of Revenue district office, the Illinois Department on Aging, the Lieutenant Governor's senior action centers., area, legislators' offices and various senior citizen centers. In addition, citizens may obtain applications by calling the Department of Revenue, toll-free. at (800) 252-8972.
