The key is learning to antic ipate spontaneous action and then reacting quickly to record the activity on film. Nancie Battaglia, a photo- journalist and the photo coordi nator for the Lake Placid Olym pic Organizing Committee, says, "you have to understand a sport or athletic contest before you can anticipate a decisive moment and then capture it with < your camera." Her advice applies to Olym pic class competition, a ski meet between two high school teams, or a speed skating race held dur ing a winter carnival. Sports pictures should illus trate and highlight an event's ex citement or athlete's perfor mance. Stop-action photos can freeze fast-paced activity but don't al ways show the speed involved in the sport. However, stop- action does show the athlete's stress, strain and form. The opposite of stop-action is the action photo that shows a blurred image streaking in front of a blurry background. It con- Jm . AN OBSERVANT AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER can capture the excitement of fast-paced sports on film. Kodak makes a wide variety of color slide and print film that is capable of pro- ducing good results indoors or out, under all types of lighting conditions. When a photographer moves in close to the subject and snaps a nearly head-on shot of the win ter athlete, the photo records the competitor's facial expression, flying snow and ice, even feet off the ground. These elements clearly show the viewer the in tense action of the sport and the reaction of the athlete. Panning with the camera is another effective way to record sports action. In this instance, the skier, skater or hockey player is clearly visible against a blurred background. A pan shot spells speed and action. To pan with a 110-format or 35 mm camera, frame the sub ject in the viewfinder and keep it centered there by slowly pivot ing at the waist as the action passes. And remember, as you pivot, to gently and steadily squeeze the shutter release. The camera must be moving at the same speed as the athlete to effectively freeze the action of the subject and blur the back ground. Ms. Battaglia also recom mends you select film for the type of lighting conditions you're shooting under. She uses Ektachrome 64, 200 and Koda- chrome 64 slide films or Koda- color II film for pictures on bright, clear days when the snow throws off a strong reflec-; tion. On overcast or cloudy days she prefers high-speed Koda- color 400 film for prints and Ko dak Ektachrome 400 film for slides. Here are some additional photo tips from Eastman HEAT PUMP GIVES YEAR-ROUND COMFORT: An increas ingly attractive answer to the mounting energy proMein is the all-electric Weathertron® heat pump from General Electric. By cooling in the summer and heating in the winter, heat pumps like the 36,000-BTU model shown are providing reliable operation in thousands of installations from coast to coast. Economical heat pump reduces home fuel use Lodak Company, the official photo consultants for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Carefully compose the pic ture in the viewfinder before you squeeze the shutter release. Include color uniforms, neutral backgrounds and a central point of interest. Dress warmly and follow your camera dealer's advice on t winterizing a camera. Record-cold winters three years in a row, coupled with the possibility of a recurrence in 1980, find many U.S. home owners seeking alternate methods of keeping their homes comfortable next winter. The addition of an all-electric Weathertron® heat pump from General Electric to a forced-air fossil-fuel heating system can help to solve this problem. . This alternate system, called Plus-One, can reduce the home owner's dept'idence upon short supply and/or expensive fossil fuels. When adding a heat pump to a fossil-fuel heating system, General Electric recommends operating a heat pump as long as it can keep the indoor tempera ture at the desired level without the use of the furnace. It then automatically switches over to the fossil-fuel system when the heat pump can no longer handle Take along extra film, bat teries and gear so you catch a full day of competition on film. The idea is to provide eco nomical heat pump operation and reduce home use of short- supply and/or expensive fossil fuels. The heat pump principle may be new to many consumers, even though it's not new in the heating and air conditioning in dustry. Basically, it is a central air conditioning system that can both heat and cool. In summer it extracts heat from the air inside a home and pumps it to the outside and, in winter, extracts heat from the outside air, raises the tempera ture and distributes it inside the house. The heat pump isn't magic, but it has the capability to pull enough heat from the outdoor air during much of the heating season to keep the indoor air comfortable. This is possible because even at cooler tempera tures, there is still heat in the outdoor air--and the heat pump takes advantage of that heat. -- Homeowners with existing electric furnaces may also bene fit by adding a heat pump to their system. They can save considerably, when compared with forced-air electric resist ance heating costs. Actual sav ings vary, of course, according to where and how you live. Users can take advantage of heat pump economy in mild weather and use their electric furnace only during low-tem perature periods when the ther mostat automatically switches on the electric furnace. Thus, annual electric heating bills can be cut substantially, de pending on climatic conditions and geographic location.
