Homemade pretzel rods can be made with less salt than you would get in commercial pret zels.'. They are a welcome addition to any party to be enjoyed along HOMEMADE PRETZEL RODS Bread dough enough for one loaf One egg Salt Cut the dough into '/4-pound chunks after kneading. Roll out each chunk of dough with a rolling pin until it is V*" thick. Slice the rolled dough into (/z" by 8" strips using a pizza cutter or razor-sharp knife. Place these strips on oiled cookie sheets, not touching. Brush lightly with beaten egg. Dust with salt to taste. Allow to rise in a warm place until they are about V*" high. Bake in a preheated 350° oven for about IS minutes. Reduce heat to 200° and con tinue to bake for another 15 min utes, or until the pretzels are an even medium brown. If still slightly soft inside, re duce the heat to the lowest pos sible setting and allow them to dry out completely. The equivalent of one loaf of bread dough yields about three dozen pretzel rods.
