Remembering When... (with long time subscribers) RITA B. ULRICH "The McHenry Plaindealer has been in our home forever," Ms. Ulrich said, "and I have happy memories of people associated with the Plaindealer, over a period of many years." A former Plaindealer owner and publisher, Frank Schreiner, roomed at Bridget Frisby's - her grandmother. Ms. Ulrich pointed out that her aunt, Ann Frisby, not only wrote the "Personals" column for some 50 years but also watched the present editor of the Plaindealer in her childhood days in McHenry. Old Timers will remember "Bacon's Strip" - the predecessor of So I Hear column on the sports page. Raised in the house on Main street, Ms. Ulrich said, "I can still see my brother, Harold Bacon, at his manual typewriter pounding out Bacon's Strip with two fingers." Harold still makes an occasional appearance in So I Hear, writing from Tucson, Ariz., under the name of "Zeke." Ms. Ulrich has lived in California for many years and said she kept in touch with old friends in McHenry through the Plaindealer, which her mother, Nellie Bacon, mailed to her. r»UEi iTLinii«UbntiLii Delicious Breakfast Muffins Legal Notice Cinnamon Granola Muffins are a delicious addition to a back-to-school breakfast. HOSPITAL NOTES | SENIOR CITIZEN'S CORNER HELPFUL IDEAS FOR SUCCESSFUL RETIRFMENT Sleeping Problems? Many senior citizens en counter problems when it comes to sleeping. Here's a new theory on the situ ation which might prove helpful -- "paradoxical in tention", or, doing the opposite of what you real ly want to happen. In the case of trying to get to sleep, that means you should actually try and stay awake, some theorists say. The "gimmick" has worked under certain re search projects. One per son reduced her wakeful fretful insomniatic period ^ f r o m a r T i e a n o f 9 0 r n i i v utes a night to a mere five, while another person went from 57 minutes to 6. Observers speculate the treatment might work be cause trying to stay awake actually eliminates the in somniac's u^jpal anxiety about not being able to fall asleep -- which lets him relax enough to doze off. So far, the technique has been tried only on chronic insomniacs but anybody experiencing sleeping problems can try it out -- just don't forget to set the alarm once you decide to stay awake. Let's see. How many ways are they formed? Only two ways-by rising air currents, which make "cumulus" clouds and by the cooling of layers of air which reach the saturation point and become "stratus" type clouds. Do you know the further cloud classifications? They are four--high (cirrus, cirrocumulus and cir- rostratus), middle (altostra- tus and altocumulus), low (stratus, nimbostratus and stratocumulus) and vertical or towering clouds (cumulo nimbus, cumulus). Cumulonimbus are the familiar and dangerous thunderstorms of summer. They can tower as high as 75,000 feet at the equator, though their highest altitude decreases as one approaches the poles.
