They include sifch high- fat foods as non-dairy creamers and chocolate bars; foods often high in salt as well, such as potato chips and many fabri cated cocktail snacks. Fast foods have become a way of life for many A m e r i c a n s . W h i l e nutritionists and physicians would recommend fewer deep fried foods and more vegetables and fruits, the fact remains that many people opt for the fast foods because of the time it saves in busy lifestyles. At least be aware of what fast foods offer you. While calorie count is important to the dieter, factors such as high salt and high fat content make a diet heavy in fast foods one that may lead to heart and circulatory disease in later life. Also, nutritionists lable some foods as having empty calories. An example would be the shakes and sundaes traditionally based on milk and now using other ingredients, having little or no benefit to the body. For dieters, a cross section of fast food calorie counts may be helpful. According to the franchises or other reliable sources, the calorie counts of some of your favorite fast foods may influence your choice. MacDonald's Big Mac has 541 calories, the small hamburger 257 calories, the filet of fish 402 calories and the chocolate shake, 364 calories. Burger King's regular cheeseburger adds up to 305 calories and its vanilla shake is 332. Pizza Hut's Thin and Crispy Cheese Pizza (based on Ms a 10 inch pizza) is 450. Dieters may do well to opt for the tossed salad. An Original Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner adds 830 calories to your daily calorie intake. Extra crispy runs higher in calories. Long John Silver's two- piece fish with batter adds up to 318 calories and the shrimp with batter (six pieces) gives you 269 calories. Your favorite coke (8 oz.) totals to % calories; Tab, zero calories and Sprite (8 oz.) 95. • ' A small order of French fries almost anywhere runs to approximately 215 calories. Next time you eat fast food, play the adding game and recognize how many calories you're gobbling up.
