OUT OF REACH-Jim Johnson of McHenry and a Gator opponent find the ball jut an inch away as they go for the rebound below the Warrior net. Crystal Lake edged McHenry out of a first place tie with their 64-59 victory. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Crystal Lake South Gaters Win 64 To 59 Over Fighting Warriors By Dick Rabbitt Coach Gary Collins still has the hex over his former mentor Ken Ludwig, as the Collins coached Crystal Lake South Gators defeated the Warriors 64 to 59 Friday night at McHenry. It was the third straight win for CpUins over a Ludwig coached we, and left the Gators tied with Dundee at 3 and 0 for the FVC lead. The Warriors dropped into second place with a 2 and 1 record. The height of the tall Gator five, plus the numerous turnovers of the Warriors, which seemed to come at the wrong time, proved tKfcir downfall. Dean Anderson the 6'6" Gator center was the difference as he picked up a game high 22 pts. The initial period was a game of what we would call alley ball basketball. Both teams could not seem to untrack, and the turnovers were too numerous to count. p 8HB1 S] roii BAUSCH&L SOFLEN s* • "CHARGE IT" *Eye Examinations Available soft, „ CONTACT LENSES! However, the Gators got the best of the deal and led at the quarter 18 to 11. In the second period the Warrior press began to take its toll on the Gator five. The tenacious defense of the Warriors caused the South five to make several key turnovers and the Warriors took advantage with Johnson, Sroka, Jensen, whose basket at the buzzer put the Warriors ahead for the first time 25 to 23. Halftime Hopes The downstairs concession stand was buzzing with excitement at halftime, as it seemed the Warriors had the momentum, and things look bright for the Ludwig crew. The Collins crew solved some problems at the in termission, and broke the Warrior press to make Mootini's tenth game of the season was at Hebron where they defeated them by a score of 26-9. Scaring went IB pts. for Scott Freund, 3 pts. for Brian Ttackenbrod, 2 pts. each for Brian Diedrich, Dave Zabielski, Mike Widhalm and 1 pt. for John Norkett. Has made their season record 7-3 overall and S-2 in con ference. Their next game was a non -conference one against St. Thomas of Crystal Lake whom for the second time this season defeated us by a score of 51-36. The bright spot of the day was the 10 pts. by Brian Truckenbrod, Scott Freund had 8 pts., Roger Barrett 5 pts., John Norkett and Jim Koleno 4 pts., 2 pts. for Brian Diedrich and Chris Byron and 1 pt. for Mike Widhalm. They plan on coming to our invitational tournament in January and our team will probably get another chance to play them. Our overall record is now 7- 4. On Dec. 1st., we went to Fox River Grove to play another conference game. After the 1st quarter, Montini was down by 9 pts., but by the end of the 1st half they were only down 2 pts. Fox River Grove opened the gap by 5 pts. after the 3rd quarter to 23-18, bu£ in the final quarter Montini came back and outscored than 11- 6 to tie the game in regulation 29-29. In overtime we scored 1st to take the lead, but with 1:15 left Fox River Grove scored to tie it. Montini came back to score another basket by Mike Widhalm, who had 13 pts., and with 3 seconds to go Roger Barrett who scored 7 pts., made the 1st of a 1 and 1 free throw to put us ahead by 3, the game ended 34-31 in our favor. Brian Diedrich, who scored 6 clutch pts. fouled out with 1:15 left in overtime and was replaced by Brian Smith who played very well. Brian Truckenbrod rebounded very well and added 5 pts. Scott Freund who has been a dominating figure in every game was double and tripled teamed, scored only 3 pts., but had numerous assists passing the ball to open teammates. John Norkett also played good defense and the entire bench helped cheer and support their team to vic tory. The 7th grade record is now 8-4 overall and 6-2 in conference. several easy baskets during the third period as they rolled to a 7 point advantage 44 to 37. At the 6:30 mark of the final period the Gators established their biggest margin of the game a 12 point bulge 49 to 37, and from then on it was catch, up basketball for the Warriors. After Jim Johnson fouled out withr2:05 remaining, the Warriors did spurt to within 5, but that is as close as they came and went down to defeat. As Coach Ludwig com mented in the locker room after the game, "It was a poorly played game by both teams fighting for the lead in the conference". We will concur with that statement, as play was actually sloppy at times for both teams. The Warriors had four players in double figures, with Johnson, Jensen ami Sroka all tallying 14, and Bob Zeller picked up 12. However, they were not the same team of the past several weeks. Their passing was poor, and their defense was not up to par. Nevertheless the con- St. Jte - - -IS-A SALE LENSES ONLY YOUR COMPLETE EYE CARE CENTER COMMONS VISION CENTERS 4305 W . E lm St.. Johnson, Jensen and Sroka led the Warriors with 14 points each, but it was not enough as they dropped their first conference game by a 64-59 score. . STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH" So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR* As I left the news room feeling mighty smug after finishing the sports section of the Friday issue, our dear editor advised that due to holiday deadlines I would have to write three columns in each of the next two weeks. Now, that's a dandy little assignment for a country boy just struggling along. In chinning with Tony and Helen Williams at the ference season is still young, and there is still plenty of games left for the Warriors. With a healthy team the Warriors will still have to be Considered a conference threat this season. Friday we hope to give you the Christmas pairings from Elgin. Freund wake, I learned that Tony is another November baby.' "We are almost twins," sez I. In a little while, Tony came back to where Alvina and I were sitting and asked if I would really like to meet my twin. So he brought Earl R. Walsh to make us acquainted. That E.R.W. was the late Marie Baer's husband. We both recalled that when Dr. Bill Nye was aboard ship during his service in the navy, he looked over the list of those aboard and got a shock to read the name Earl R. Walsh. Dr. Bill had to clear that up pronto. TV brought us a ding-dong basketball game as DePaul beat Northern Illinois 57-55 in overtime. It was victory number 600 for Coach Ray Meyer and N.I. made him earn every point. V It is common now for fans to hoot and holler when an opposing player attempts a free throw. They do it in high school and college like sportsmanship is dead. I don't like it. The next thing we know, a roar will hit the skies when a golfer gets ready to putt. SUDDEN THOUGHT- is there anything sweeter than a little baby -- I looked at a pair of tiny hands the other day and marvelled at the precious little bundle. The Clarence Freunds travelled 1,200 miles to at tend the McHenry Day picnic in Florida, then landed at the previous site. They were out for the longest distance prize. They will try again next spring. McHenry is busy. Tried to get across the street from the Post Office and told Helen Busch I was looking for a Girl Scout to help me across. She had to move her car. So, I tried "Pep" Davis. She told me to go to the cross walk. Big help! Thinking of the shah and our hostages is enough to make a fellow say something like "Oh, pshaw!" Or, you can spice that up a bit. There was song and laughter at Bimbo's Thur sday night as Eddie celebrated-his birthday. Maybe they don't sing very pretty, but sing loud they do. The Earl Turners were telling us about having some old fashioned candle holders that were used in the long ago on Christmas trees. They tried to get some store to display these rare items, but found no interest. Can't believe it. There must be people old enough to remember. Good sportsmanship: UCLA- basketball players shaking hands with Coach Ray Meyer after his DePaul team won the game. Gary has some big, strong fellows on his team. They are rough to handle close to the basket. The Warriors had trouble getting in for short shots and were not the usual threat from the outside without their sharp shooting Bob Greve. The flu bug caught Bob and kept him home. Bob Zeller played with an injured, heavily wrapped hand, but that didn't stop him from giving it the old college try. The speedy Warriors were very much in the game except for a poor third quarter. They made the mistakes which certainly didn't miss the eyes of the coaches. Hustling Tony Sroka took Bob Greve's place in the starting lineup, joining established lettermen Len Jensen, Bob Anderson, Jim Johnson and Bob Zeller. Chris Freund wasn't in long, but he catches my eye as a real comer. Watch him in his senior year. Bob Bitterman, a little fellow, fit into the press real good while Rich Glosson came into the game when his size was needed. The Warriors look like winners. Watch for news on the Booster Gub's "Good News Bears" game. It will be a big sports event. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who was named NL Rookie of the Year? 2. Who won the 1979 Heis- man Trophy? 3.
