rohnsburg Skyhawks Lose Pair Of Weekend Games \ By Randy Swikle Despite a brilliant 27-point effort by senior ace Tom Schoenig, the Johnsburg Skyhawks lost a crucial Shark Conference game 63- 55 at Beloit Catholic Friday ni^ht. The next night a much improved Johnsburg squad lost a thrilling overtime contest 66-64 at Grant. The Beloit Catholic loss makes Johnsburg's chances for its second Shark Con ference title an uphill climb. The Skyhawks are now 1-2 in the conference, and they cannot afford to lose another conference match. It's a tall assignment for a ball club that has turned in so many inconsistent performances this season. Against Beloit Catholic, the Sky ha wks--sa ve Schoenig-couldn't seem to do much of anything right. A "fired up" Crusader team, seeking to best their former coach Bob Kies and his Johnsburg team, outscored the Skyhawks 18-8 in the first quarter. It was only a 15- point scoring blitz by center Tom Schoenig in the second quarter that narrowed the score and kept the Skyhawks »n the ball game. At in termission Johnsburg trailed 30-29. At the outset of the third quarter, a 20 foot jumpshot by senior Skyhawk Chris Dixon gave Johnsburg its first taste of the lead 31-30. The rally lasted until the middle of the quarter when the Crusaders tied the score at 38 and then jumped back into the lead. The Crusaders held the momentum for the rest of the game. Schoenig made all but four of his field goal attempts during the evening, but the rest of the club shot only a total of 32 percent from the field. Dixon was second high scorer with eight points, and Brett Zimbrick and Frank Jakubicek each netted seven. The Skyhawks looked much better in their contest with Grant, even though they lost the game. In the first quarter the Grant Bulldogs jumped into a 21-14 lead over the Skyhawks, primarily on the strength of nine successful free throws. Coach Bob Kieft complained about the lop sided results of the referee's whistle during the first half. Johnsburg had five free throw attempts during the first half, while Grant was awarded 17 shots at the free throw line. The Bulldogs made all but four of those free throws. Brett Zimbrick, John sburg's star guard, had a hot gun the first quarter, sinking five of seven field goal at tempts. Zimbrick put on a fine display of speed and agility during the evening. He was on target with most of his long jump shots, and he drove the entire court on several occasions to score layups. The Skyhawks started their big rally that resulted in overtime with about two mintues remaining in the fourth quarter. Junior Rick Neiss want to the line and sank two free throws to narrow Grant's lead to 63-56. Chris Dixon scored on a jump shot and a drive to bring the score to 63-60. Grant scored another free throw when Zimbrick fouled to stop the clock at :28. Three seconds later, Dixon was fouled and made the first of a none-and-one. He scored another free throw when fouled again with nine seconds remaining. Reserve forward Chuck Novy sank a basket from close range at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. A Johnsburg attempt to control the bdll during the overtime period failed when the ball was stolen, and it only took a single Grant basket to win the game. Johnsburg was scheduled to play Richmond in the Johnsburg gym Tuesday night. The next Skyhawk game is Dec. 26 during the Hampshire Christmas Tournament. The Skyhawks are the defending champions of that tournament, which now has 16 teams par ticipating. It was just a case of too much depth of the Elgin tankers that led to the Warriors defeat. In spite of wrestling only nine weight classes and forfeiting three, the Warriors placed third in the eight-team tourney. Five cham pionships, two second places, and one fourth place was captured by the local matmen. Jacobs won its own tournament with four championships. Harvard took second place as a team, winning only three cham pionships. Since neither Jacobs nor Harvard forfeit ed any weight classes, it's obvious that McHenry could have easily taken the tournament had they come with a full squad. Other teams participating in the event were Holy Trinity, Mooseheart, Richmond, St. Benedict and Waubonsie Valley. Taking championships for McHenry were Brian Wrona (119), Bruce Brda (132), Vic Betancourt (138), Dave Ramer (145) and Ed Hughes, (167). Wrona, who decisioned his first two opponents and pinned his final challenger, now has a 9- 1 season record. Senior Brda, undefeated at 10-0 for this season, pinned his first two men in 4:11 and 1:06 and won the championship with a 5-2 decision over Scott Byrne of Jacobs. A 1:02 fall and two decisions carried Betancourt to his first place standing. His season record now stands at 7-3. A 6-2-2 record is currently held by Ramer. He decisioned his first op- Haderly and 3rd., Berry. 400 Relay: 2nd., O'Don nell, Berry, Haderly and Kloss. ponent - Todd Muglar of Jacobs, picked up a 4:37 pin in the next round, and won a major decision (11-3) over Tim Kunkel from Harvard in the Championships. Back in action after his football injury recuperation period, Senior Ed Hughes is piling up the wins as fast as he can. His two pins and decision in the Jacobs tourney brings his record up to 4-0. Hughes also holds the record for the quickest varsity pin this season, pinning his second wrestler in 32 seconds on Saturday. Second place awards were captured by Warrior's Pat Haderly (112) and Mark Betancourt (155). Haderly posted a 17-0 superior decision in the first round and a 9-6 decision in the 50 CHAPEL HILL _ GOLFCLUB per couple •Champagne Dinner •4 hour Open Bar •Live Entertainment •Favors •Breakfast tegular Menu Served in iMain Dining Room 5pm-10pm •DINNER- Consomme Royale Roast Strip Sirloin of Beef w/Bordelaise Sauce Double Baked Potatoes Tomato ala pettis pois Princess Salad Baked Alaska HAPPY HOUR Wednesday thru Friday Cocktails $1 Mixed Drinks 80c Beer 40l Free Hors D'oeuvres JOIN US FOR SUNDAY BRUNCH ALL YOU CAN EAT $_95 DINNER SPECIALS 3 Wednesday Roast Pork w/ Bread Dumpling Pprk Shank & Sauerkraut Thursday Friday STEAK FRY FISH FRY (One Only) Saturday Sunday Whole Roast Chicken BBQ Chicken BBQ Ribs Wednesday thru Sunday j Free Glass of Wine SATURDAY SPECIAL Roast Chicken Dinner syoo for Two Served DECEMBER SPECIAL English Cut PRIME RIB CHAPEL HILL WILL BE CLOSED MONDAYS & TUESDAYS beginning Dec. 2 (Oper^for^anc^uet^only^^ The Club will be closed to the public Dec. Betancourt won by a forefeit in round one, pinned Kevin Richter of Jacobs in 3:11, and then was squeezed past in the last 12 seconds by his Harvard opponent in a 10-8 Championship decision. A fourth place was earned by Warrior Scott Schmidt (126) who lost his first match, wrestled back into action with two pins in 1:39 and 1:46 and then lost his consolation match.
