Construction is key to fall Paris styles PAGE 4 - PLA1NDEALER • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY II. 1980 By ANNETTE PETRUSA Paris has presented its fashion lineup for fall, once again dis­ playing the youthful exuber­ ance, timeless elegance and fab­ ulous flights, of fantasy which have kept this grand city a com­ pelling and captivating center of style for centuries. Paris designers have pulled out all their creative stops for this latest fashion showing, with splendid results. New shape If a general statement can be made about the Paris look for fall, one would have to say that Paris fashion is all "shaped up." Although each designer has a personal way of interpreting this new movement towards unclut­ tered, superbly tailored clothing, almost all of Paris is attuned to the importance of construction in fall fashion. The Paris collec­ tions are fitted, form-conscious and assertively silhouetted. In keeping with this new awareness of garment construc­ tion, every extended shoulder, ] peplum and drape is actually cut into the makeup of the garment in a display of master tailoring. Bold shapings require bold fabrics, and Paris fashions for fall offer a rich variety of tex­ tures and weaves: strong jersey knits, thick and thin ribs, multi­ colored tweeds, mohairs, plush looped yarns, flannels, fine twills, serge and a brilliant array of lustrous satins and sparkling weaves for evening. Color palette Color for fall runs the gamut, from sedate grays and blacks to brilliant emeralds, mustards, sapphires and plums. Patterns are important, with checks, plaids and houndstooth appearing throughout the collec­ tions. The tartan plaid is espe­ cially important in the fall show­ ings, taking on bright new life and direction in the hands of Parisian designers. Suits arc a key look, but the star piece of all the collections is the coat. Paris made it the high­ light ofafoew fashion look, with the introduction of V* and V» length coats--purposefully inte­ grated with all of the suits and dresses due to this revealing new style. Perfectly cut, with an asymmetrical closure, the new coat is the important beginning of a definite new fashion trend. Exciting creativity As for the designers, Paris this fall had one of its most exciting and creative seasons. Kenzo, the darling of Paris' young set, shows delightful new spirit in a collection of "little girl" dresses with short, full skirts flounced out with petti­ coats. Pablo and Delia, the two Argentine designers who have taken Paris by storm, have created a charming collection complete with shaped little jackets, a great stormcoat, a line of striking 7/s length redingotes and a pretty dancing dress, long sleeved and tiered with ruffles to the knees. Space chic Thierry Mugler, the Paris de- signer in love with sci-fi, presents a collection of his well- known "spacesuit" jumpsuits in the bright colors and striking geometries for which he is known, coupled with a totally wearable group of knitted dresses and more "down-to- earth" and very appealing draped jerseys. Paris' new star Claude Mon­ tana continues to work fabulous leathers into his collection, maintaining an exaggerated shoulder but developing a sense of proportion in his accompany­ ing skirts and slacks. He favors large cape collars, belted waistlines and the strong use of color for a collection filled with drama and imagination. Marc Bohan for Christian Dior uses the tartan theme in a bright new way, featuring giant red and blue plaids in ensembles of short jackets and pared down skirts that carry on the Dior tradi­ tion of youthful elegance. Givenchy's elegance For the ultimate in elegance, look to Givenchy for a line of super-slim and ultra-sophisti­ cated clothes, perfectly in line with the well-bred chic that has made him Audrey Hepburn's ex­ clusive designer and the favorite of elegant fashion purists the world over. - The designs of Karl Lagerfeld for Chlod represent some of fall's finest new offerings from'1 Paris. Lagerfeld is fashion's jrpajdr. shape-maker, showing struc-' tured coats with huge sleeves and sharp asymmetrical clos­ ings, and short jackets with stiff peplums jutting out from a de­ fined waistline. Lagerfeld also offers a group of easy knits in soft shift dresses with his "crater" collar and matching knitted coats. He has introduced an entire palette in shades of gray, an­ nouncing the new basic neutral for the winter season. Strength of design Whether experimenting with geometric designs in satin for evening, clutching a garment to­ gether with a fabulous pearl brooch or elevating a simple knit dress with the addition of a met­ allic belt cinched at the waist, Karl Lagerfeld is without doubt one of Paris' strongest creative forces. Last in line, but always first in the eyes of fashion followers the world over, Yves St. Laurent re­ ceived special notice at the fall showings for his collection of clean and simple classics in- N spired by the softly romantic lode of the Scottish Highlands. Panne velvet kilts are paired with short wool jackets piped in black, wrapped with tartan stoles and topped with soft little tam-o'-shanters in black velvet with plumes or bows. St. Laurent defies all trends • towards the extended shoulder, the shorter skirt and the more geometric construction, show­ ing a collection remarkably re­ freshing in its softness and purity of design. Highland flings For evening, St. Laurent con­ tinues the Scottish theme in black velvet knickers tied with bows at the bottom and paired with lavishly ruffled shirts. Two other important evening looks emerge from his fall col lection--a series of brilliantly colored and richly fabricated Chinese style tunic and pants de­ signs and a group of soft taffeta dresses, full skirted and opulent in a romantic Victorian style. Yves St. Laurent moves from day into evening with drama and a strong sense of direction-- leader of the diversely creative designers who continue the fash ion tradition that is Paris.
