V Remembering When (with long time subscribers) . HELEN BAUER Mrs. Bauer recalled the days when she wait to school in McHenry. "Frank Schreiner had the McHenrj\Plaindealer then, in the building next to Bolger's drug store, and we used to get scrap paper from him,'* she recalled "We had to bring our own paper to school; so if we found out that he had extra, everyone would be down there." Mrs. Bauer was also a resident of Volo for a time Mid she remembered well the days, particularly in the winter and tyring, when Route 12 had not yet been paved. "In the swing and winter, both the cars and the horses would get stuck in the mud and the snow. She said that when the roads wore bad it was not uncommon fur people to cut fence wires and drive through a farmer's field. When she lived on the Bauer farm on Green street she said she could remember people driving through the cow fields, past the house and exit out onto Green street at about the place where Jim Althoff lives now. The McHenry Plaindealer has been a part of her family ever since she can remember.
