Baby chicks, rabbits and ducklings are symbolic gifts often given during the Easter season. But the Illinois department of Agriculture is urging con sumers not to purchase baby animals for gifts this year. It's not only a bad idea to give children the ..fragile chicks and ducklings-it s against the law. The Illinois Humane Care m\ i ~i •" ' mil of Animals act specifies that it is unlawful to (sell, offer for sale, barter, or give baby ducklings or chicks as pets o r n o v e l t i e s . The law also specifies.that ducklings, chicks,or rabbits that have been dyed, colored, or treated to impart an artificial color, may not be sold or given away in Illinois. Dr. David Bromwell. chief of the state ag department's Bureau of Animal Welfare says there is good reason for the law since more than half of the babes given normally die within the first two weeks, v , 1 Bromwell suggests that parents consider alternate gifts for children this Easter, such as plenty of colored eggs; BST JBBFLEL LARRY RYAN, horseshoer, 385-2542. 3-264-4C HORSESHOEING, 13 years experience. Everything was greatly appreciated. Edith & John Skidmore. 4-2 (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Twins.") No one who has not had twins (myself included) can fully appreciate both the joy and difficulty that awaits the parents of twins. The problems with twins are so special and so universal that there are "Twin Clubs" for parents of twins. These clubs offer support to the parents and solutions to problems that one-child-at-a-time parents never experience. Imagine trying to shop with twin babies (shopping carts have room for only one baby). Imagine trying to feed two babies at one time. Imagine trying to keep two children from writing on the walls. The parents of twins begin to feel that everything in their lives is doubled: there are two baths to give, two diapers to be changed, two mouths to be fed, two sick children to care for i(usually they both get sick at the same time), two pairs of boots to put on, etc. The work of caring for twins really is double the work of caring for one baby. Caring for one baby is tiring; caring for two the same age is exhausting. That is not to say that there are not joys to be had in being the parents of twins. Imagine the joy of seeing two one-year-olds learning to walk and talk; the joy of seeing two babies sleeping peacefully; the joy of seeing two children laughing at the same time. There are also interesting aspects to raising twins-' especially identical twins.! Some twins even develop their own Words, their own language that is understood only by the two of them. Twins seem to understand and empathize with each other as no one else can. It is difficult to understand this unless you are a twin, have raised twins, or are, as I am, the son of an identical twin. Rf iOO fl*P MlSTAtCMS V | * T M » * P y f l U A T l O N , - pl fAi! This was the greatest number of in cidents in the Unit's seven- year history and an increase of 80 percent over 1978 figures. John Renkes, ERU supervisor, said the large increase is the result of improved reporting of spills, adverse weather conditions, and the tremendous amount of hazardous materials produced, transported and disposed of in Illinois. Of the total incidents reported, there were 257 transportation-related spills, 58 pipeline breaks, 74 in volving drums and cylin ders, 317 from stationary installations and 82 from unknown sources.
