About 30 years ago, the club moved to a spot on the Pitzen farm, where it still stands today. In 1966, Pitzen said, the club held Lewis Pitzen day, in honor of his 25 years membership. Pitzen has always been an avid hunter, trap shooter and fisherman. Coming from Germany, his grandparents settled and farmed "on top of the hill" in about 1843, Pitzen recalled. The family Started a resort business in about 1918 and, at one time, had 56 boats operating on the Bay. All of these boats were under the command of Captain Pitzen, Lewis' uncle. Lewis remembered the first boats used by his uncle. "They were steamboats, great big things, but then we went to gasoline motor boats - there was no other transportation." Pitzen said people who had summer cottages and homes around the Bay would come by train and bus to Scott's landing, where the Pitzens would pick them up. In the early years around the Bay there were only three year-round families in the area: the Pitzens, Rudy Johnson, and Charles Elmquist. "You might see one car go by a day," he said. Lewis also recalled when electric lights came to the Bay area. "My father gave the electric company a right-of- way, so they wired the barn for free," Pitzen recalled. "We had to pay for the house though." Lewis also said Indians used to come around the farm house begging for food. During the winter months, Lewis and others would cut ice for $1 a day. Jacob R. Jus ten had an icehouse on the Bay. U.M.W.
