STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Drug Offenses Bring Arrests Four people were taken into custody by McHenry County Sheriff's police this past week for offenses in volving cars and drugs. While driving past Woodstock high school, sheriff's police noticed a car being driven in circles on the school lawn. The police car blocked the other driver's attempt to leave. As the police approached the vehicle, the officer noted an aura of "burned can nabis" and saw open liquor and cocaine in the car, ac cording to the report. The driver of the car, Lisa Lutker, 17, of 4503 W. Lake Shore drive. Wonder Lake, was arrested for possession of cannabis, purchase or acceptance of liquor by persons of non-age, criminal damage to property under $150 and open liquor in a motor vehicle. A juvenile companion was referred to authorities. In another Incident, a car "accelerating rapidly" and traveling without taillights was stopped by police on Chapel Hill road. Witnesses said the driver of the car fled the scene on foot after damaging the lawn and garden of Carl Walker with the car. The car belonged to Alice Witherbee, of 7317 Salem, Wonder Lake, who reported it stolen when contacted by police. To Your Health A Service of McHenry Hospital ex- has by Marion Olsen Health Reporter Facts We Thought You'd Like to Know The average life pectancy in the U.S. increased 50 percent during this century with most improvement taking place during 1900-50. Longer life ^expectancy results mainly |rom lowered infant mor tality although modern medical treatment also extends life. The average Norwegian woman can expect to live longer than other women \in the world, 77.83 years. U.S. women are fifth in world longevity, living until age 76.5. Swedish men top the world longevity list for males with average life expectancy of 72.07 years. U.S. men rank below 10 other countries with life expectancies of 67.3 years. The U.S. ranks fourth in world calorie consumption, the average person eating 3,330 calories per day. Ireland ranks first with 3,410 calories per person per day. Could it be the Irish potatoes? Approximately 125 Americans are killed by lightning each year. Most of those killed were outside, either under trees, in a boat, riding tractors or playing golf. With the trend toward insulating and weather- proofing homes in order to conserve energy, resear chers are becoming con cerned that human health may be in more jeopardy from indoor pollution than outdoor pollution. Opening windows to freshen the air in the house may be prudent, truck emission smells notwithstanding. Roller skating accidents are on the increase. In 1978 some 100,000 people were treated for injuries due to roller skating accidents. While most of them were children, 20 percent were age 25 or older. The average person receives 100-200 millirems of radiation per year from man-made and natural sources. One normal x-ray exposes a person to 20-30 millirems. Each person in the U.S. spent an average of $752.98 on health care in 1978 (in cluding dental work and eyeglasses). About two- thirds of this expense was covered by private in surance or government programs. It appears developing health habits to stay well saves money. Finally, Hungary has the highest suicide rate in the world with 40.6 persons committing suicide per 100,000 population. The U.S. ranks sixteenth with 12.7 suicides per 100,000 population. mfrmwAY!
