McHenry. Illinois 60050 Only after the storm has moved on, and its victims start slowly sifting through the pile of rubble that was once their living room, do most homeowners realize: a tornado can happen to me! While, there is still time this year, the Insurance Information Institute urges homeowners to make plans that will help protect both families and property from possible „death "and destruction in a 1980 tornado. Making a detailed in ventory of the contents of y o u r h o m e w i t h photographs, if possible-is a good place to begin, ac cording to the Institute. Once the list is complete (and you realize how much you stand to lose in a torando or other natural disaster), the I.I.I, suggets homeowners, and renters, contact their in surance agents to compare "what you own" with "what you're covered for". Both the household in ventory and your homeowner's policy should be stored along with other valuable papers in a secure place away from the home. Once you have taken these two important steps toward protecting what you own, the next move is to learn how to react to minimize physical danger from the storm. Before... -Everyone in your home should know where to seek shelter when a tornado is sighted. If a storm shelter is not available, make certain the family knows where the safest place in the house is to move to. (The most secure location is normally on the bottom floor, basement if available, and at the center of the building. A bathroom or closet away from windows is a good second choice. ) -It is also a good idea to keep adequate supplies on hand (flashlights, a first-aid kit, transistor radio and fresh batteries), stored in a convenient shelter or protective area. During... Last April, when a tornado plowed through Wichita Falls, Tex., 26 of the 43 persons who were killed, and 30 of the 59 who were seriously injured, were attempting to outrun the funnel with their cars. -The Insurance In formation Institute strongly r e c o m m e n d s t h r e e precautions for residents when a tornado invades their community: -Stay inside (preferably in a single-family home or apartment complex, but virtually any shelter is better than being caught unprotected); -Avoid automobiles and mobile homes (Motortets trapped in the path ofiiti onrushing tornado should abandon their vehicles and seek shelter in a nearby ditch or low-lying area. I^rnadoes are too swift, and erratic for anyone to gamble on out-running them). -Don't be in a hurry to leave your shelter after the storm has passed (Power lines may be down, and shattered glass and splin tered pieces of severed wood are other physical hazards likely to greet you after the rumbling has died away). Be careful as you survey the damage. /-After... -If your home or property is damaged by a tornado, try to make immediate tem porary repairs to prevent further damage. Your in surance coverage will normally pay for reasonable costs for such; repairs. Save all receipts, -Your insurance agent should be contacted as soon as possible to report property damage. Be sure to leave praise instruction with the agent as to where you can be reached if you must leave your home, or can't find it. -Begin to make a detailed list of property that has been damaged by the storm in order to help your insurance company and adjuster process your claim as quickly as possible. (Here is where- those hours of preparing a careful in ventory and checking your policy coverage will pay off). Sam Houston's troops cried as they descended upon Mexican Dictator Santa Anna's soldiers in the last battle for Texas inde pendence. From February 23 to March. 6, 1836,' 188 stout hearted Texans fought to hold the Alamo, a San Antonio mission, against 2.400 of Santa Anna's sol diers. .. . All of the brave defend ers. including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and Wjlliam Travis, died trying to hold the mission. But the victory was a costly one for Santa Anna. His army suffered 1,500 casualties, and the un daunted courage of the your request to Insurance Information Institute, Suite 1039, 175 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, 111., 60604. Alamo's defenders so stirred Houston's troops that in the battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, 800 of Sam Houston's men crushed a Mexican army of 3,000 troops and forced Santa Anna .to sign treaties to end hostilities and recognizing Texas' independence. The U.S. Postal Service has "Remembered the Alamo" with two postage stamps. The first, a three cent stamp commemorating the centennial anniversary of Texas independence, was issued March 2. 1936. The second, issued June 14. 1956, is a nine cent stamp.
