Grove avenue, McHenry, is participating in refresher training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He is an officer assigned to the amphibious assault ship U S S G u a d a l c a n a l homeported in Norfolk, Va. R e f r e s h e r t r a i n i n g simulates all aspects of actual battle. The crew is taught to react as a team to nuclear and chemical at­ tacks, fires and damage within the ship, personnel injuries and other emergency situations. When the training is complete, the ship will rejoin the fleet as a battle-ready unit. Guadalcanal is designed to launch helicopters which carry Marines and their eauipment to the beach during amphibious assaults. His ship is 592 feet long, carries a crew of 528 and can accommodate more than 500 Marines. Wilson Jr., son of Gerald L. and Margaret Wilson of 509 S. River road, McHenry, has departed on a deployment to the Western Pacific. He is a member of the 3rd battalion, 5th Marines based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. His unit will spend six months overseas as part of Pvt. Horsman Ends Training As Crewman Pvt. Michael W. Horsman, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Horsman, Island Lake, recently completed training as an armor crewman under the One Station Unit Training (OSUT) program at the U.S. Army Armor school, Fort Knox, Ky. OSUT is a 13-week period which combines basic combat training with ad­ vanced individual training. During the training, students learn the duties of a tank crewman, including the firing of the tank's ar­ mament and small weapons. They also receive instruction in field radio operations, map reading and tank maintenance and repair. the Marine corps' unit deployment program. While in the Western Pacific, his battalion will be based on Okinawa and participate in training exercises with units of the 7th fleet and allied nations.
