Preston Clears Bar At 10' In Pole Vault Event By Randy Swikle Johnsburg senior Bruce Preston cleared the pole vault bar at 10 feet to win second place in that event at the six-school A1 Bohrer Invitational track meet at Cary Grove Saturday. This is Preston's first year out for track, and it was only the second time he has competed in the pole vault. The first time he ever vaulted, he made 9'6" and earned first place. The entire Johnsburg squad, with only 11 members attending, scored three times as many points (43Vfe) as it did last year, but the Skyhawks still finished in last place behind winner Lake Zurich, Cary Grove, Marengo, St. Viator and Carmel. The 3200 meter relay team of Skyhawks Jay Jackson, Bob Baker, Rick Szumlas and Wayne Besserud finished fourth, improving its time by 15 seconds. Mike Steck, a sophoipore, finished seventh in the varsity 3200 meter run with a time of 11:20. Senior Jim Flood also ran, clocking a 12:02. Senior Rick Szumlas came in fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles. His best time of the day was 17.2. In the 800 meters, a fine effort by Johnsburg .senior Wayne Besserud earned him a second place with a time of 2:03.7, which was three seconds faster than his previous best. One event later, Besserud came back to grab a third in the 400 meter race with a 53.6 clocking. Junior Bob Baker ran his best race this year in the 400 meters with a time of 56.5. He tied for sixth, but im­ proved his previous best by three seconds. Szumlas came back in fine form in the 300 meter hur­ dles with a time of 43.6, which earned him second place honors. Newcomer Lenny Ippolito surprised everyone by running in the 300 meter low hurdles and clocking a very respectable 46.5. This was the first time he has run that race. In the 1600 meter run, Steck did not- place but earned a good time of 5:27: Freshman Mike Rowden had a fine day, despite leg problems, clearing the high jump at 5'6" for the first time in his life. Chris Dixon did place third in the high juipp with a fine 5'8" jump. . The track team was scheduled to host Grant in a make-up meet. Wednesday the Skyhawks cindermen host Crown and Hononegah. The Warriors 440 yd. relay team of Pete Ritthaler, Ron Schaefer, Keith Schaefer, second behind St. Charles by a margin of one-half of a [second. Ritthaler picked up a third place in the 440 yd. dash, and Akins a 4th in the 220 yd. dash. The Warriors scored 11 points in the meet, so there were 16 schools scoring less, which can be expected of such a big meet. Friday the Warriors will host their own meet beginning at 3:30 p.m. with the field events and '5 p.m. with the running events in the 15th Annual Warrior Errors Plague Skyhawk By Randy Swikle The Johnsburg Skyhawk baseball squad suffered two big losses last week, a 13-0 setback against Marengo and a 17-2 loss to Grant. Both garnet were played at Johnsburg's Tiger Field. In the loss to Marengo, only Johnsburg junior Scott Valentin managed any hits. The centerfielder singled in the first and fourth innings. Marengo smashed the baseball for three runs the first inning and for six ad­ ditional runs the second inning. In all, Marengo got 11 hits and committed no errors. Johnsburg got two hits and committed 10 errors. In the Grant contest, the Valentin brothers, Scott arftl Kurt, knocked two hits apiece to lead the Johnsburg batters. Kurt, senior third baseman, smacked a double in the fourth inning but was called out trying to reach third on an overthrow. The only other Johnsburg player to get a base hit was Dave Maurer who tapped a double in the sixth inning, scoring Scott Valentin and then scoring himself as Kurt Valentin singled next. Errors continued to plague the Skyhawks as they lost to Grant. The Skyhawks committed seven errors to Grant's three. Sophomore Cheri Kofler took first place in the 220 meter dash and also first place in the 100 meter dash. In the long jump she finished fourth. Sue Moulis won fifth place for the 800 meter run. The girls were scheduled to travel to Crown for a meet with the host school and Crystal Lake Central on Monday, and they host Harvard and North Boone on Thursday. McHenry High Girls Third In County Meet By Dick Rabbitt On a beautiful Saturday in April the McHenry High School girls' track team of Don Seaton placed third in the McHenry County Meet held at Jacobs High School. Woodstock won the meet for the thrid time in a row scoring 166 pts., with the Gators of Crystal Lake South finishing second with 137 and the Warriors trailing in third place with 73.
