& T Remehribering When (with long time subscribers) MR. AND Rtks. HARVEY NYE A lifetime resident of McHenry, Harvey Nye remembered well the tent that served as a show house in the parking lot of the Riverside hotel. 1 "1 used to peddle bills on Satunfcy nights," he said. Back in the "horse and buggy" days, Harvey would drive a lot for his tether, one of three doctors in McHenry at the time. "We used to heat bricks on the stove and put them in the buggy to keep our feet warm," Harvey recalled. He added that when his father had to go out again, they could count on getting another horse from Henry Freund. In later years, Dr. Nye had the third car in McHenry. "It was a Kiblinger and had the Ugh, buggy wheels," he said. Mrs. Nye also was well acquainted with wagons as she rode to St. Mary's school in the early morning hours to deliver milk from her father's farm. * When school was over, she would walk back to the farm, which was located near Ringwood. She recalled when her father hauled stones for the foundation of St. Mary's for a $1 a day. Both Nyes remembered the fire in St. Mary's school. Mrs. Nye attended St. Mary's and recalled when a nun came in the room one day and said, "I want you to go home, I don't want to see you here. In those days you did what the nuns ^aid." Harvey Nye was at Landmark school when the fire broke out. "We saw the fire," he said. "The\eachers said we could go and help but when we got^here we were told to stay out of the way."
