Coach Russ Williams pitched Chuck Dicker in the game, giving work horses Dave Colberg and Joe Bellich a much needed rest. Dicker only allowed Ave hits, but gave up five earned Local Teams Foiled In 16" Tournament The McHenry VFW 16" Softball Tournament last weekend saw the Giraffes from Schaumburg and Nischan Shoe from Waukegan finish in a tie for first place as rain ended play with both teams with one loss apiece Nischan Shoe was undefeated in the tournament, having beaten 3-D Bowl, Old Bridge, Murphey's Pub, and the Giraffes earlier in the tourney The Giraffes however beat Nischan 14-13 in a see-saw affair to give Nischan its first loss and force a final game. The rain came and the last game was washed out. The first and second place purse was split between the two foes, which signaled the first time in eight years that a McHenry team failed to finish in the top two teams. Rick Wakitsch was the only local player on the Nischan team and played a fine tourney with five home runs overall. Centerfielder, Gregg McPherron and Mark Vogt also managed singles for the losers. With the loss, McHenry is now in a tie with Crystal Lake for the conference lead <pending Tuesday's game with Lake-in-the-Hill) and the crown could be decided in Crystal Lake July 23 as the two top teams collide again. So far this year, McHenry and Crystal Lake have split two games. After that game, McHenry travels to Richmond for the last scheduled legion game of the year on July 28. Williams noted that support of the legion alumni game on July 27 has been good so far and that he may suit up to catch a few innings himself for the alumni. Although never threatened, the winners waited until their last inning to pour it on. After Vinnie Freund led off with a single and Dave Miller popped to right, eight straight batters hits safely with everyone scoring including Freund. the winners's Twig Miller held another hot bat going three for three with three RBI's and three runs scored. Leadoff batter Jeff Meyers was also three for three with three rims scored. Don Bentz drove in four runs with a two-run double and two sacrifice flies. John Michels went two for two with three RBI's, coming in for Rich Meyers who was beaned on an errant throw from third to first on a grounder. Bill Meyers added a pair of singles as did Ron Miller who also drove in two runs. John Meyers hit his third inside the park homer of the season with a man on while Jim Yaworski was two for three with two runs scored. Jim Cook went two for three to lead_Jewel Park. In Women's 16" i leatl^Jewel Leon Palatas drove in the only run for Jewel. Foxhole's shortstop Ron Miller made the defensive play of the game when he turned what looked like a single up the middle into a force out to end the second inning. Rusty Nail Inn Surprises Sport Stop Rusty Nail surprised John's Sport Stop-Old Bridge in a close 8-7 contest. Nail shortstop Ray Thelen came up with the play of the game as he dove to his left to stop Ken Ludwig's shot up the middle and then raced on his hands and knees, forcing John Pitzen at second, to end the game and leave the tying Sport Stop run on third. Larry Jones was two for three with three RBI's in cluding the game winning RBI in the sixth. Tom Janik was three for three with a triple and has not made an out in three games. Ken Mueller added two hits. Dan Stanowski singled, walked and scored twice. Linda Lent two for four, pitched a spectacular game, and gave up only one hit until the seventh, when with two outs, Roni Rogers hit a slow roller to third enabling her to reach first safely. Oaks threatened in the bottom of the seventh getting bases loaded, but were unable to score. V.F.W. vs. River Shannon River Shannon, as has been their history, came through in a pinch by overcoming an earlier V.F.W. lead to win 8-5 in nine ninnings V.F.W. opened by scoring two runs in the first and one in the second, and went into the third three runs up. River Shannon came back in the third scoring two runs, and one run in the fourth to tie the game. Both teams scored one run in the sixth to keep the game even. Good defense on the part of both teams kept the game tied until the top of the ninth when River Shannon scored four runs on four walks and two hits. V.F.W. tried to keep the game alive when after two outs, Chris Connell hit a lone shot homerun, but River Shannon held them to a final 8-5 game. Sunnyside vs. Wayne's West End Avenging an earlier loss, Wayne's West End defeated Sunnyside 18-8. The game was more exciting and closer than the score im plies. Twice in the late in nings Sunnyside loaded the bases, but Tonee Weyland was able to pitch out of the jam, although she gave up seven walks and was preoccupied with a beetle on the mound. Everyone except the second baseman for Wayne's fwho drew four walks) had at least one hit, including doubles by Gina Weyland, and Sharon Marunde. For Sunnyside Joanne hit a triple, and their base running was alert but too many costly errors proved to be their downfall. Thursday . Stroh Lite claimed first place, the Angels took second, and Sulky Inn placed third. Sue Houser and Mary Mclnerney did a fine job running the tournament. Roni Rogers to lead the Sport Stop. Brian Wilson went three for three. Ken Ludwig was two for four with a triple, two runs scored and one RBI. Doug and Greg Freund both had two hits while Gary Gilpin returned to the lineup to hit a sacrifice fly and triple. Second Federal Pulls Out •13-12 Victory Over Huemann's Second Federal Savings of Fox Lake was trailing 12-4 going into the bottom of the sixth but rallied with eight runs in the final two innings to pull out a one-run victory over Huemann's. Second Federal's left fielder Bob Tortorici was a standout offensively and defensively. Twice he robbed Joe- Huemann with identical sliding-on-the-knee catches on shallow liners to left. On offense, Tortorici had 3 hits with a three-run homer plus the ground shot to second with two outs in the seventh which caused Huemann's second baseman Tom Wensch to throw widly and permit the winning run to score. Bill Lomas went four for five with two RBPS and three runs scored for the winners. Brian Loser socked a pair of run scoring triples plus a single. Pete Black burn added three hits and two runs scored. Don Rode slammed two triples with two runs scored and two RBI's. John Wilkinson and Kevin Smith had two hits each.
