Dixon Secretary of State If you are involved in a traffic accident, whether or not you are at fault, you should be aware that Illinois law determines if you are required to file an accident report. Whenever an accident results in death or bodily injury, or damage to the property of any one person in excess of 8250, there are three important steps which must be taken by the driver of the vehicle involved. 1--If no police officer is present, notify the nearest' police station as quickly as possible. If the accident occurs outside of a municipality, notice must be given to the nearest office of the county sheriff or Illinois state police. Whenever the driver is unable to give immediate notice of an accident and there are passengers in the vehicle, one of them who is capable of doing so must comply with the requirement. 2--A written report must be made to the Illinois Department of Tran-, sportation within 10 days after the accident.
