Williams has two more games to worry about before McHenry can clinch the legion crown. After that, his duties turn to catching in the Alumni Legion game, which was postponed Sunday because of rain. The game has been changed to Saturday, August 9, at McCracken Field. Start time is 1 pm. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Beat Crystal Lake, 5-2 Legion Wins Big In a head-on collision between the two first place contenders in the legion conference, McHenry clipped Crystal Lake in a must game for both teams, 5-2. The win puts McHenry in sole possession of first place in the conference, although they need to pick up wins on July 29 and 31 to clinch the title. In the first inning, McHenry bunched two singles and a double together to tally its two runs for an early lead. Mark Vogt hit a double to right centerf ield, scoring Phil Maurer and Kurt Valentin who reached with singles. ' Crystal Lake failed to score in the bottom of one despite the fact that McHenry pitcher Joe Bellich gave up two singles to Overby and Gallagher. Crystal Lake cut the lead in half in the second, however, after McHenry went down in order. Six men batted in the inning and one run sewed when pitcher Lea hey readied on a Dave Maurer throwing error, moved around to third on two ground balls and scored on Overby's second hit of the game. The game stayed at 2-1 until the fifth. Crystal Lake tied the score at two on a two-out double by their thirdbaseman and another double by centerfielder Gallagher. Gallagher was caught at third, trying to stretch the double into a triple and the rally was cut off. In their half of the sixth, McHeniy gathered three hits and a walk, scoring three runs that would go unanswered during the remainder of the game. Catcher Kurt Valentin started the inning with a single to left. After Vogt struck out third baseman Phil Brenner walked and Ken Hoff grounded to the pitcher moving the runners to second and third. Shortstop Bob Bryniarski smashed a single to right scoring both runners. Bryniarski then scored himself on a double by rightfielder Rob Bussey. Crystal Lake had two runners on base with two away in the bottom of the seventh when shortstop Williams grounded to Bryniarski at short who flipped to Maurer at second to end the game on a force. For McHenry, McPherron, Valentin and Vogt all went two for four with Vogt getting one RBI. Bryniarski had two RBIs on one hit while Maurer and Bussey rounded out the nine-hit attack. Pitcher Joe Bellich struck out seven, walked three and gave up one earned run in his complete game victory. Joel Wakitsch 1) Shannon Welcome 2) Bridget Pogose Comment On Sports I0XM6 * * * By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Roberto Duran may have-as opposite corner trainer Agelo Dundee said--fought the fight of his life against Sugar Ray Leonard. On the other hand, Leonard might have fought the fight of his life. That won't be determined until they are rematched. Duran, 29, says he'll give Leonard another shot at his recently-lost welterweight title, but on the same finan cial terms he fought under in their recent fight. That would add up to something like ten million or more for Duran and one and a half million for Leonard. That might be the hitch which prevents a rematch, for a time. As far as Duran is concerned, a rematch should be within a year. Leonard took quite a bulling, if not a beating, in a fight with a man he outreached three inches. The longer the time from their recent fight the more Leonard will recover and forget. Duran now has a psychological edge. Also, Duran is getting older. Rarely is a boxer at his peak after 30. Muhammad Ali might have been, and there have been others. But certainly after 30, 31 or 32, it's almost always down hill. Leonard should be improving in the next three years. But one never can say what a sound beating will do to a coming fighter. Roland LaStarza never seemed the same after taking on the bruiser, Rocky Marciano.
