Teens Plunge /nio Conservation Program Building animal nesting boxes, working on prairies, and cleaning out rivers have one thing in common. They have all been projects of the YCC, Youth Conservation Corps, a federal program for the summer employment of teens. - The 1980 YCC project is sponsored by the McHenry County Conservation district and consists of twelve teenagers and two super visors, all residents of McHenry county. This summer, the YCC'ers started by building nesting boxes for Mrs. Sally Joosten, director of the McHenry C o u n t y C o n s e r v a t i o n D i s t r i c t W i l d l i f e Rehabilitation project. They have also worked at Glacial Park cleaning the Nip- persink creek of lodged trees, making it safer for canoeists. They have removed old barbed wire fence still existing in the park. Their latest project was to help maintain the prairie area at Glacial park. Other work plans include timber stand management at Kunde woods, cutting trail at the Hollows, and manning the booth at the County fair. It is not all work and no play for YCC participants, though. They visit many places to learn what is being done to help maintain the surrounding environment as it should be. A trip to Goose Lake prairie was recently taken. Here the group met another YCC crew. An over night at Silver Springs State park concluded the trip. Rob McLennan and Beverly Meuch, supervisors, stated that they are supervising an "excellent group." They say, "They're responsible and depen dable." So far, the summer has been a successful one from everyone's viewpoint. *24 AXAI&A MANHATTAN ISLAND In 1626, Peter Minuit bought all of Manhattan Island's 2,200 acres for 60 Dutch guilders' worth of trade goods.
