V PAGE 4 - PLAINDE ALER • FRIDAY, AUGUST 15. 1W0 Keep Cool With Right Fan If you're planning lo buy a fan this summer to beat the heat, keep performance safety and quality in mind when making your selection. Although some fans look alike, they often differ in the amount of heat relief they provide, according lo Janet Weaver, University of Illinois Cooperative Ex tension home equipment specialist. A fan does not lower room temperatures as an air conditioner does but "cools" by creating a breeze or air movement that helps to i n c r e a s e m o i s t u r e evaporation. Ms. Weaver explains that some portable fans are rated by the amount of air, in cubic feet, they can move in one minute. The cubic feet-per minute or cfm rating offers some indication of how powerful a fan is. However, tests lo deter mine cfm ratings are not standard and some manufacturers choose not to label their fans with a cfm rating. To determine if the fan performance will be adequate, Weaver recom mends you turn the fan on and feel the velocity of the air flow it creates and determine if it is adequate for your needs. If yct^re considering a fan with more than one speed, you should test the air flow created at all speeds and decide if you need a fan with one, two or three fan speeds. Some deluxe models feature timers that allow users to set the device to turn the fan on or off at predetermined times. "Be sure to ask the salesperson for help and keep the size of your cooling task in mind as you choose," Weaver advises. She notes that a fan can be used in two ways: for ven tilating or for circulating. When used for ventilating, a fan pulls fresh air into a room through an open window. When used as a circulator, a fan keeps air within a room in motion. A circulation fan can help an air conditioner distribute cool air through the house, thus reducing energy costs. If the fan you are con sidering will be used as a ventilating fan, you will need to consider the size of the window where it will be placed. Make sure you know the window measurements before buying. Safely also must be con sidered. Select a fan with the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) seal of approval, Weaver recommends. If the fan will be placed where children can reach it, check the grille designed to shield the fan blades. Most grilles are made of sturdy plastic or steel mesh. Make sure that the slots cannot be enlarged by pushing, pulling or tugging. "If you can reach your fingers through the grille and touch the blades, the fan may not be a safe choice for Warning Signs Of Stroke One of the goals of the Easier Seal Society for McHenry County is lo make available up-to-date material on subjects relating to local social matters. IRS "Problem" Office Is Help For Taxpayers When taxpayers have complaints or problems that do not seem to get proper attention through normal channels at the Internal Revenue service, they can find assistance from the IRS Problem Resolution (PRP) office. Here's how the PRP system works, according to the IRS. First, a taxpayer brings the problem, such as a lost refund or incorrect billing, to normal IRS channels. If the problem is not solved, the taxpayer can call PRP. If the problem is not resolved within five working days, PRP will give the taxpayer a status report and a projected completion date. Keepin' Healthy POISONOUS PLANTS In the summertime a child's exposure to poisons is greatly increased. I'm sure you are aware of the hazards of household cleaning products, and drugs, but are you aware that the leading cause of childhood poisoning 'is house and garden plants? Accidental poisoning victims who are more than two years of age generally c o n s u m e i n t e r n a l medication, but toddlers will eat or drink anything they can get their hands on. And the only protection against plant poisoning is constant vigilance until your children learn not lo do what comes naturally-put things in their mouths. For example, decisions made during an audit, Freedom of Information requests, Privacy Act inquiries, and complaints about IRS hiring practices are handled in other offices. A call to IRS will be referred to the proper office. Chicago taxpayers can reach PRP by calling 435- 1040 and asking for the Problem Resolution office. Taxpayers living outside Chicago should call 800-972- 5400. and vegetable gardens. In some instances, only parts of a plant are poisonous. Rhubarb is an example. The stalk, of course, is edible, but the leaves can be fatal. Some of the poisonous plants common to the Mid western states include the following house and garden plants: hyacinth, narcissus* daffodil (bulbs), dief- fenbachia (dumb cane), elephant ear, castor bean ( s e e d s ) , l a r k s p u r , monkshood, lily-of-the- valley, irish (underground stems), bleeding heart, rhododendron, azaleas and yews. The poisonous trees and shrubs in Illinois include: peach (leaves), cherries (twigs and foliage), oaks (acorns and foliage), elderberry and black locust. The poisonous wildflowers and plants to be aware of are: jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple, buttercups, poison hemlock, jimson weed or thornapple and nightshade. To help reduceTfie number of deaths from accidental poisoning, the Illinois health department has designated three Regional Poison Resource centers to serve all of Illinois. The toll-free number is 800-555-1212, ask for the telphone number of the Poison Resource center in your area. You can call one of these centers at any time, day or night. Tell them what your child has swallowed. They will tell you what to do.
