This two-run homer put the score at 9-5 for Johnsburg over B&H in the final playoff game in the Youth 16" Softball league. Bentz had three hits in four at bats to lead Johnsburg, who ended the regular season at 14-2, before winning three in a row during the one-day single elimination playoff. The losers ended the regular season with 9-7 record. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Johnsburg Wins Youth Crown, 12-6 Fog settled in at Petersen Park last Sunday during the final game of the Youth 16" playoffs between Johnsburg Businessmen and B&H Industries. B&H was fogged out, 12-6. The tourney was a one-day, single-elimination affair because of rain and the fact that many of the players will be leaving for college in the near future. B&H advanced to the finals by beating seventh place team John's Sport Stop in a close 9-8 decision at 4:30, and beating Peter Baker Road Builders at 6:30 in another close game, 3-2. Johnsburg, who ended the regular season at 13-2, had an easy time with Joseph Frett-Riverside Bakery, 10-1 at 5:30 and McHenry Favorite Sport Center in a 12-3 game at 6:30 before entering the finals. B&H was held in the top of the first as three batters flew out and left Doug Oef fling stranded at third after reaching on a Joe Huemann error. Johnsburg proceeded to score one in the bottom of the inning after Jeff Meyers struck out looking to lead off the inning. Brian DiBlasi wolkoc nd scored on a two- out single by Don Bentz before pitcher r v ^ ended the inning with a fly to left. In the second B&H took the lead on a pair of runs on no hits, as four Johnsburg infield errors sent Knox and Miller around to score. Johnsburg went three-up three-down in the second. Johnsburg started to pull away in the third, however, as three runs scored on singles by Jeff Meyers, Brian DiBlasi and John Meyers, followed by a Don Bentz double to right center. Johnsburg added two more in the fourth on an RBI triple by second baseman Joe Huemann, scoring Jim Frantz. who had reached on an error. Huemann later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kurt Valentin. With the score at 6-3 after four, Johnsburg went on to tally three runs in each of the next two innings highlighted by Jeff Meyers and Don Bentz homeruns. B&H could muster only three more runs in the sixth and seventh on consecutive singles by Tim Zeller, Noodles Knox and Hezzy Miller, but it proved too little as the season ended with Johnsburg repeating as Champs in the youth 16" softball league. Don Bentz had a single, double, homerun and five RBIs in four trips to the plate to pace the businessmen attack. Jeff Meyers was two for four including a homerun and two runs scored while Brian DiBlasi was two for three and Joe Huemann collected two hits in four at bats with two runs scored. B&H secondbaseman, Hezzy Miller was two for three and scored twice while collecting two RBIs for the losers. In the third and fourth place game, McHenry Favorite won a see-saw eight-inning battle, 9-7. Brake Parts Over St. Regis Nolan Liquors vs. River Shannon River Shannon claimed their ninth victory of the season as they defeated Nolan's Liquors 11-1. Karen Hintz, in her pitching debut struck out one batter from Nolan's and limited them to one unearned run. River Shannon's timely hitting and agressive base running delighted coach Doug Eschner. V.F.W. vs. Sunnyside Inn V.F.W. came away vic torious over Sunnyside Inn as they edged them out 4-0. Cathy Bitterman pitched a one hitter, as her teammates backed her up with errorless defense. Wayne's West End vs. Oaks Marathon Oaks once again combined their defense with offense and came away with a 33-1 win on 23 hits over Wayne's West End. Cookie Stanowski led the way for Oaks going five for five and also pitching her way to her sixth victory without a loss. Mary Sue Parker was three for five with two homeruns, Mary Ellen King and Kath Rogers were three for five with Rogers hitting a homer, and Sue Garcia also slamming a homerun. Brake Parts vs. St. Regis Brake Parts can now claim sole possession of first place in their 4-0 defeat over St. Regis. Either team in winning was able to take first, Regis started with a bang when Dar Costello singled; but a liner from Sue Houser's bat was caught at deep second by Diane Wilson, who then threw to first to double Costello up. Defense was tough on both sides as no runs crossed the plate until the bottom of the fourth, when Bernie Shaver of Brake Parts singled enabling Barb Blanken to score on a close play at the plate. In the fifth Regis led off with a single by Mozell who was doubled off first when Vicki Kopsell caught a line shot and fired to Mary Mclnerney for the out and for Brake Parts second double play. Regis threatened again in the sixth, when after two outs Sue Houser walked, and took third on a single by Karen. After deciding not to walk Wendy Gee, but pitch to her, Wendy smashed a liner right to Mclnerney's glove retiring the side. Brake Parts broke loose in the sixth; after two outs; Barb Blanken singled. Vicki Kopsell was intentionally walked, and Bernie Shauer reached first safely on an error. With bases loaded Cis Moraer doubled down the right field line driving in three runs. Bernie Shauer, in her second game of the season pitching; allowed 5 hits, two walks and struck out one batter, it would seem ap propriate that she'd get the game ball...but unamiously it was given to Mary Mclnerney, player-coach, who gave 100 percent to bring the team back to first place honors after two years.
