Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health center staff. This article is "Coping - Food Addiction"). While food is not addictive in the same sense that some drugs or alcohol are, food intake can be "abused" in much the same way as addictive substances. Overeating, that is, eating beyond the point of providing nourishment, is usually a symptom of an underlying emotional problem. While there are a variety of emotional problems that result in overeating, the overeating always has the same effect: it does not relieve the problem for more than a few minutes, it is unhealthy physically, and it usually results in the person feeling worse emotionally. People who eat com pulsively will go through almost anything to get food into their body quickly even to the extent of eating raw, uncooked, or unappetizing food. The compulsive eating is not the result of physical hunger or need for nourish ment. It is an emotional hunger that is responsible for the craving, and any kind of food will suffice. Diets have little effect on the food addict, because the basic premise of a diet is to deprive the individual of the emotional nourishment that is- represented by food. People may be willing to put up with physical hunger, but few people can deny the emotional cravings that demand to be satisfied. Weight loss groups often work better than a simple diet because they tend to not only break the food habit, but also provide its members with the emotional support necessary to deal with the food deprivation. Therapy dealing with the underlying emotional problems can also be of value in substituting for the emotional needs that are not being met. The most ef fective treatment of food addiction usually is a combination of therapy and regular attendance at a weight loss group. * • * * Freedom is not always the right to do and to say what you please. By Stanley James For the beginning stamp collector or the seasoned ex pert, the chance discovery of a rare and valuable stamp can be the excitement of a lifetime. As is the case with most other collector's items, it is the desirability and rarity of a stamp that can make it worth thousands of dollars. An interesting case in point concerns the first U.S. pictorial stamps, which were issued in 1869 and were the forerunners of today's com- merWratives. 6ue to a printing error, portions of the designs of three of these stamps were printed upside-down. These inverted varieties of the 15- cent, 24-cent and 30-cent denominations are now among the most valuable of all U.S. stamps. ^ "Efie inverts were dis covered while the 1869 stamps were still in circula tion, but received little public notice. Long afterwards, the faulty stamps began to turn up. In the 1930s, a New York stamp dealer visiting Port land, Ore., stumbled onto a copy of the 30-center with inverted flags. It had passed through the hands of several dealers and collectors, but no one had noticed the error. '4 NAPA t imurriER C£flT£R We want your exhaust system business.
