Johnson, manager of the local Alexander Lumber Co. yard, was awarded the Ford Tudor automobile given away as a grand prize at the Fall festival. Joe Dowell received the radio which was given away at the same time. The awarding of the grand prize closed the three-night program staged by the McHenry Development Trust, which is starting a fund for the purpose of bringing some kind of a factory to McHenry to provide employment for local people. Several thousand small bass were dumped into the Fox River near the John- sburg bridge, being sent there from the federal fish hatchery at Eau Claire, Wis., where the government has about 3,000 acres set aside for the propagation of fish in the Mississippi river. This shipment of fish was secured by John A. Miller, a director of the McHenry chapter of the Izaak Walton League, FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 5, 1940) A committee of prominent Riverside drive business men attended the city council meeting with plans for widening Riverside drive in the block bounded by Elm and Pearl streets. A very satisfactory agreement was reached between the com mittee and council. While the council cannot assume the expenditure or any portion without a special assessment, they can handle the changes in street lighting and certain portions of street repair. The hazardous condition caused by the present narrow street has long been recognized by the present McHenry residents. At various times the city council has sought federal aid, but plans have never ^materialized. Better roads in the sub division and much needed improvements in the park and beach were assured at an enthusiastic and well attended meeting of property owners in Mc- Cullom Lake. A new organization to be known as the Property Owners Association of McCullom Lake was formed with fifty- one paid up members to start the ball rolling. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of September 1, 1955) Adele Schmitt of John- sburg is representing Alverno college, Milwaukee, Wis., at the Federation's National Congress held at the Hotel William Penn in Pittsburg, Pa. The Federation is made up of 200 Catholic colleges and universities and represents 210,000 college students. Such activities as overseas relief in the form of financial and educational aid, relief to needy students in the United States, etc., are scheduled to come up for discussion. There are lots of ways to keep young and the older one gets the harder one tries. For our sports editor, S.I.H., the thought of a new bright blue car standing in his driveway each morning seemed a boost to his spirits. A real snappy color for one on in years. ("From Musin' and Meanderin') Martinetti's Fiesta hotel and restaurant on Rt. 14, Crystal Lake, was com pletely destroyed by a flash fire which broke out early in the morning. Various estimates were made on the amount of damage, some running more than $200,000. Jack Yegge is spending two weeks visiting relatives in DeWitt, Iowa, having left by train from Elgin. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 26, 1970) An entry of Northern Pump Company Farms, McHenry, won two con secutive years in Hereford cattle judging at the Illinois State Fair. Last year's champion bull, NP Regulator 8435, a son of NP Regulator 2176, won the two- year-old class and proceeded to capture grand champion honors again. The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce will host the first of six weekly programs entitled, "Selling Is Our Business" for businessmen in this area. The Illinois Retail Mer chants association will provide the speakers for the weekly sessions, which will deal with the importance of good selling procedures.
