Story By Joel Wakitsch Keeping his head down and his cigar in hit mouth, Jackson blasted out of a sand trap on number two in third-round action of the scratch championship. Things were calm and Itool in this year's battle due mostly to the absence of Ed Buss from the final foursome. Buss did, however, end up tied for third with Gary Adams and Denny Jackson with a 305. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE'GAYLORD Women's | Thursday Morning | Pistakee Golf if "don't slip away too soon Summer", is a phrase used by many a golfer. But here it is the last competitive Thursday of golfing at Pistakee. Hold still those precious moments of sheer happiness as three golf tens put three birds on our "Birdie Tree" <m Aug. twenty-first. Sandy Nank chipped one in on No. 6 and Dawn Schnulle followed with her second birdie of the year on No. 6. All summer in Michigan as well as in Illinois Dawn has shown some spectatular shots on the fairways as well as on the greens. Our third birdie went to a precise and super golfer Libby Johnson. She birdied on No. 4. Teeing off with a confident swing unto the elevated green and smoothly putting in for a birdie. That was her third birdie at Pistakee! Fates that rule golf cannot be ruled but by only fine golfing. On Aug. fourteenth Lorie Huml teed off with a spec tacular drive on No. 7. She was on in two and with no effort ran her ball into the hole for a birdie! Jean Ohleha a first year golfer (a beautiful airline stewardess) has made some brave efforts that paid off for much improved golf. She had some very good shots today and is hopeful for next year. With knowlegeable effort on Marie McKim's chipping she tapped one out of that sunken sand trap unto an elevated green to a no putt on No. 4. Eventful day for Marie. Catching that same spirit Edith Nimsgren teed off on No. 4 and made a "tradesman's" entrance for a par. Golfing with Edie is a competitive effort for me. Heidi Kuehn played an exacting game with all those fairway shots that literally scream towards the green. Joan Teichmiller safely tucked in a long putt on No. 9 as the green held. Joan's long fairway shots proved that her 2nd year of golfing carded up a good year. Maryrita's long classic fairway drives makes many a par. Remember her six one putt greens. Maggie Molidor has had a busy year on the course, ending up with a crisp high chip that came in on No. 5 with a no putt. Speaking about those classic pitch in's - Carol Barnicle with lovely rythmn smoothly pitched her ball from 100 yards toward the eighth green, followed by a crisp chip on. Maggie Bowen says she enjoys golfing especially if you have a partner! Fifty percent of the time fate leaves her to golf alone as she chips one in on No. 4 with no putts. Betty O'Brien ac complished what very few can in golfing; and that is in nine perfect straight tee offs! Now look at this - Jeanine Diana hits her tee- off on No. 8 with an em- mensely powerful shot that came only a few feet from the hole. That looked like 250 yards, to her foursome! Somehow these Pistakee golfers really know how to chip on with no putts, cause Marilyn Lang follows with a repeat on No, 7. - Roy Roadirnen brought a Charlie on the course today that gave her havoc all too muchee! She put up a brave effort with a few spectacular shots. Brave efforts are the words for Cathy Haugen's wood drives from behind trees! Whew! . It did rain some as Agatha Corine and Jo Rutz came off the course like three little smiling wet birds. Spies noted Cammie Hunt's high pitch in on No. 8. Beautiful. With Yvonne Matt's Positive Happy Attitude on golfing; Marlene, Doorthy and Bernice Dolce make up an Optimistic foursome. Now for the low netts... Remember girls that this week we are having FUN GOLFING! Marilyn Ehlen • Baton twirlers have firm, taut arms from all the arm movement required in their sport. If you don't have a baton handy, here's a quick way to shape up your arms: move your fingers rapidly like a concert pianist. When your forearms are tired, shake your hands out and gradually make the shake bigger, moving your arms out to the sides until you're flapping like a bird. Then bring the flapping down to little circles, arms straight down out at your sides. Cirde forward 10 times, back 10 times. • Think it's time for a diet? Take a good, long look at your self. Art Jackson (above left) chomps on his cigar with putter in hand as he walked toward the eighteenth green during Sunday's final round of McHenry Country Club's scratch championship. Pacing about 30 yards behind the three contenders, Jackson savered his five- stroke lead and paired the hole to capture the title and end the day with a 78. Tim Martin, (right), took second in the championship by recording a 78 in the final round. Below, Jackson is all smiles as he recorded his ninth club title. With Jackson is Paul Fidler, senior division champ (290) and Billy Gutzmer, handicap division champ (277). Art Jackson, shooting a cool 298 in the four- round McHenry Country Club championship, breezed to his ninth club title in 12 years on Sunday by outshooting Tim Martin by five strokes. Going into the final round, Jackson held the same five-stroke lead over his son, Dennis. The final foursome included Jackson with a 220 for three rounds, Denny Jackson with a 223, Tim Martin with a 225 and Gary Adams with a 227. Jackson played consitent golf throughout the last round, pairing 11 of the 18 holes to record a 78 on the day. Tim Martin also came in with a 78, and took second place honors from Denny Jackson, who found the going rough and ended the day with an 82. With a birdie on number 18, Gary Adams also notched a 78, and he found himfceff in a tie for third with Denny Jackson and Ed Buss with a 305. Buss, who had won the championship 12 times, wasn't among the top four, but pulled off a good round to tie for third. The second place winner, Tim Martin, found the front nine holes a bit tough as he bogied number two and five and double- bogied number three. He ended the front nine with a 40, while Art Jackson and Gary Adams turned in 39's and Denny Jackson slipped with a 42, finding sand on both sides of the green on numl&r seven. Martin caught fire on the back nine, shooting a 38 with birdies on 10 and 17, the two par five holes on the back nine. Jackson will need one more championship to tie Vale Adams, now the club pro, who took ten titles between 1937 and 1961 before turning professional. Buss recorded four of his 12 titles from 1909 until 1979. His previous titles all came prior to 1968, when Jackson started to dominate the scratch tournament. In the handicap championships, Billy Gutzmer won with a 277, while Ed Oja followed with a 282. Jack Ready had a 289 and Norm Simon came in with a 297. Paul Fidler grabbed senior division honors with a 290, followed by Mo Domoto (292), John Busscher (296), Leo Smith and George Johnson (297) and Tom Evans with an even 300.
