He is the past president of both the McHenry County Audubon Society and the Friends of Veteran Acres Prairie. He taught at Cary Junior High and in Marengo. The young man was responsible for discovering the prairie adjacent to Cary Junior high and for the formation of a group working to preserve this unique area. The first award in 1978, was given to Tom Throw and Dave Oelsen. After finishing his master's degree in zoology at Brigham Young, Throw went to work as a wildlife biologist for a firm in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Oelsen is currently employed by a travel bureau, where he guides groups into the Hudson Bay area. Certificates of completion were presented to all twelve enrollees. Patches fair participation in the President's Environmental Youth award program were also awarded.
