That's the motto adopted by the McHenry Foot ball Warriors for the 1980 season. That "little extra" may be coach Joe Schlender, who is entering his second season with the Warriors and is determined to accomplish his goals for the season. His goals aren't too high, but after a 2-7 season last year, Joe said he doesn't want to shoot for the stars yet. "Our goals are to win the opener against Steven son, to Win the Homecoming game against Cary Grove, and to have a winning season, " Joe said without hesitation. To achieve these goals, the coaches and the team have taken a number of steps that he hopes will prove beneficial to the team. First, He encouraged his team to participate in the EXTRA EFFORT-ii displayed by senior Scott O'Halleran as be tries to Impress kicking cooch Brian Wilson for the starting punting spot this season for McHenry. The 5'»", 150 lb. senior has no prior experience at the position and will be competing against junior Kelly Gartner for the position. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKIT8CH pre season weight training and conditioning clinic put on by the McHenry Park District. "The clinic consisted of weight lifting and running, which helped to build up strength in our team which is not real big, "He said. "A lot of the boys went out for track last spring to stay in peak shape, and I think it will pay off in the long run." Secondly, schlender said that his staff of El Par- tenheimer, Brian Wilson, along with soph and fresh men coaches, Dan Boland, Bill Ludwigsen, Marty Sob- cyk, Ken Mueller and Bruce Montressor, have put in a lot of extra time over the summer in meetings and recruiting freshmen to build up the program. "We have recruited 51 freshmen this year by calling them on the phone," Joe said. "If a kid isn't playing, it's not because we didn't ask him." Thirdly, he has demanded that his coaches ap proach the players like a family. "I want all my coaches to treat the players like their sons," Schlender continued. "They should motivate them like a father does his son, and they should watch out for the people they care for." Schlender has also adopted a coaching philosophy involving four elements. The team, according to the coach, must have pride in what they are doing, must be enthusiastic at all times, should show integrity to do things right, and strive for consistency. Schlender feels it is important to win the first game because of the momentum it creates for the rest of the season. He wants to win the Homecoming game because he feels the school "owes a lot to the seniors who lost many close games last year." His reason to have a winning season is to break the "losing tradition" that the school has had for awhile. The likeable leader said that Crystal Lake South has to be the favorites to win the conference title because they have "all skill people." He also said that the weakest teams in the conference appear to be the Warriors and Crown. Fighting it ouTYor the quarterback spot on the Warriors will be two seniors, Sean Haley and Keith Belzer. Both are letter men who played on special teams for the varsity and quarterbacked for the Junior varsity last year. Both stand in at 5' 10", but Haley weighs 15 more pounds than Belzer, who carries around 160 pounds. • _ "I won't know for awhile who will be my starting quarterback," is all Schlender would say. In the backfldtd, the warriors are "not three-deep" , but schlender said if he had the guys he had now every year, he wouldn't be too worried. Out of the 44 players out for varsity ball, there are 14 returning lettermen from last year's team. Senior lettermen include Sean Haley, Keith Belzer, Tim Klap- perich, Pete Ritthaler, John Doessel, Vic Betancourt, Rob Kalck, Dave D'Angelo, Kevin Lavin, Dan Freund, Tony Woo, Jack Jablonski, Andy Saunders and Jeff McNish. There are no junior lettermen. He was voted Moot Valuable Defensive Player two years in a row. He thinks of his wife Pat as "another assistant coach/' and has a seven- year-old son. The Schlenders are also ex pecting another child in the near future. In his second year as head coach at McHenry High School, 30-year-old Joe Schlender will try to improve on his 2-7 record of a year ago. Joe has stacked up an impressive amount i of historical data in his nine-year coaching career. The native of Chicago has led Aurora Central Catholic to conference titles three times and Prospect to a conference title once before coming to McHenry. He prides himself in coaching five All-State linebackers in those years and also
