Sportsketch ---- Shanahan. After graduating from Western Illinois University in physical education, Shanahan started his coaching carreer at Puerto Rico for one year, at Western the next and at Springfield the next before coming to start his nine year stint with the Warriors. He has sent four qualifiers to state finals in his nine years, but has never coached a con ference champ. As a swimmer, Sonny was captain of the swim ming and water polo teams in college and was an All- American in YMCA water polo in Springfield in 1970. CROSS COUNTRY a »%»... . * . " 3. . v i f • J ' Trouble if Bourney Goes Earl Kyle, eight-year assistant coach of McHenry High School's Varsity cross country team, made his early prediction on the year. "Right now, I would say we'll finish fourth in the conference," Kyle admitted. "We always like to finish in the top half of the conference." Coach Bill Hutchinson sat back and seemed to agree with Kyle, but then threw his usual optimism into the act. "There's a Possibility of doing much better if we work at it," he quipped. There will be only two lettermen from last year's team competing again this year. Juniors Wade Cepulis, an all-conference state qualifier last year, and Gordy Bourney, also an all conference pick, will be the main-stays of the McHenry attack. With only 15 runners making up the team, loss of key runners could spell disaster, and with the possibility of Bourney transferring to another school, the Warriors could be in big trouble. "Gordy might move out to Ohio because his father was transferred ouf there, " Hutchinson said."He could mean all the difference." Hutchinson did hint that there may be a few sur prises in this year's crop. Senior Don Mitacek, sophomores Roland Ostrander and Darren Cepulis and Freshmen Brian Wright and Steve Carby are all on the coaches potential surprise list. The McHenry lettermen this year are juniors Wade Cepulis, an all-conference state-qualifier of one year ago, and Gordy Bourney, also an all-conference runner last year. Elm Street McHenry, IL 60050 Phone (615)385-7300 As for coaching philosophy, the coach of 22 years said he likes to make practice fun by letting the team run at places like Bull Valley, Crystal Lake, Morraine Hills, Glacier Park and Whispering Oaks. Hutchinson believes that Woodstock, Crystal Lake Central, Jacobs and his Warriors will be the best in the conference this year. Other boys who will run for McHenry include seniors Pat Haderley and Joe Mullen, Junior Al Kopp, Sophomore Jim Patterson, Jeff Wallace and Ed Kopp and freshmen Erich Gaza and Robert Sarabia. The girls will also run again this year, and so far, only five girls have showed up to compete, the girls are Mary Bazan, Beth Lance, Sue Pender, Kathy Gar tner and Barb Zuben. "If we could get a few more girls, we could be tough," Hutchinson sighed. "Most girls think volleyball, field hockey, tennis and swimming are more fun though."
