Survivors include his wife, Estella, three daughters, Linda, Dennise and Joy; one Doctor Talk By Dr. Harold B. Ligon In last week's column we discussed heat exhaustion. Today we'll discuss heat cramp, a slightly more severe form of heat disorder. Heat cramp comes about from very strenuous physical exhaustion in high tempera tures. It's characterized by the sudden onset of severe cramps in the skeletal or abdominal muscles. The mechanism by which this physiological process takes place is the body's failure to replace sodium chloride (salt) loss through profuse sweating which accompanies heavy muscular work in ex* tremely high temperatures. • Usually there is an abrupt onset of prostration, with legs flexed, or drawn up. The victim may thrash about and cry out from the excruciating cramp pains. When abdom inal muscles are affected, the attack causes a doubling over, similar to an acute abdominal spasm. The ex amining physician can feel spasms and knots in the muscles. Often the skin is pale and wet but the temperature of the victim is normal. In be tween spasm or cramps, the victim is usually calm and comfortable. The treatment for heat cramp is merely the intake of sodium chloride- several teaspoons in a large glass of water three or four times a day is usually suffi cient. In severe cases, an intra venous saline solution is in dicated and is effective. • • * • The hardest job we know is trying to be im partial. • • • • Why is it that the truth is so painful sometimes? son, Rick; three grand children; four sisters, Cora Tansey, Elsie Wegner, Alvina Wheeler and Rita S t e i n s d o e r f e r ; t h r e e brothers, Richard, George and Jim. He was preceded in death by*tju*e brothers. A Funeral Mass was of fered Sept. 6 in St. Joseph church, Battle Creek, Mich.
