Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 18, 1930) At last all of the ad justments connected with the fire which surprised the community and especially the proprietor at Bolger's Drug store last Spring have been settled. The fire oc curred at the very beginning of the summer season and pursuing his policy Mr. Bolger immediately set aside all the disfigured merchandise in separate rooms upstairs, restocked with clean new goods and went on with his summer business. Now that ad justments have been made the damaged goods are offered for sale. A pretty Fall wedding was solemnized at the Sacred Heart chapel of St. Patrick's church, Sept. 16, when Miss Matilda Miller and Mr. Jacob Stoffel were united in marriage before a gathering of friends and relatives. The groom is a vali/ed employee of the Peter J. Schaefer market on Main street. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of September 19, 1940) St. Patrick's parish of Mc- Henry is celebrating Sept. 22, the' centennial an niversary of its founding in 1840. The parishioners of St. Patrick's, filled with pride in this hundred years of achievement, are making a day of festivity and rejoicing, both in a religious and a social way. The parish has grown from the handful of immigrant Irish settlers without a church or resident pastor, to the thriving parish of 1940. It takes its place in a growing community as an influence for good, not only in the lives of its members, but through their varying connections making that influence felt throughout the community. Rev. Wm. A. O'Rourke was pastor. In the second trial of Jack Russel l , Oklahoma desperado, in federal court in Chicago, the murderer was again convicted for the slaying of William Scott Hamilton, Kansas flour salesman, whose nude body was found in a ditch near Ringwood in this county, on July 1939. From S.I.H. - "Mac" isn't telling everybody, but he challenged Adele Froehlich to a tennis match for the city championship. -- You guessed it, he got "took" into camp". TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of September 15, 1955) Stanley Aim, stationed with the Air Force in Alaska, is spending a 25-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Aim. he has been in Alaska for the past seven months and upon completion of his leave will return there for v duty. His trip home was marred by the unpleasant task of escorting the bodies of four other airmen stationed at his base as far as Seattle, Wash. The four were among 12 who were killed when their plane crashed as they were enroute to another air base. Six of the dozen were close friends .of Stanley, who returned to the States in time to act as best man at the wedding of his friend, Wayne Dixon. Supervisor Walter Dean, speaking for the conditional use permit request made by the McHenry hospi ta l and Crystal Lake Hospital association, pointed to the vote as probably the most important zoning ever to come before the board. He added that the decision would culminate a three- year study and it would require another three to four years for construction fol lowing approval . All McHenry supervisors voted in favor of the requested change in zoning use. After two and one-half hours of testimony con cerning a conditional use permit for sixteen acres of land located in Dutch Creek Woodlands subdivision, near Johns burg, two continuation meetings were set for Oct. 14 and 15. A large group of objectors a t tended the meeting, but due to the long discussions, they were unable to present their arguments. • • * • Success cycle: Farm boy gods to the city, makes eru>ugh money to retire and Hve in the coun try. Another good thrift habit is to pay yourself when you're paying your bills Just write yourself a check each week or month and send it via our free save-by - mail envelope We will promptly deposit it into your savings account. And if your money is received on or before the tenth of any month, you will earn interest from the first of that month One of the oldest and still the best ideas for saving money is to deposit all loose change that you find in your pocket or purse into a coin bank at the end of each day. You'd be surprised how much money you can accumulate at the encj of each month ... money that would otherwise be spent.
