Recently read a story about bantams and bet most kids of today wouldn't know there are dwarf chickens. Our folks didn't think much of the idea, but we had bantams at our home when we were kids. One time we got a setting of eggs and hatched them out under an old hen. They were all roosters! We had better luck with chickens. Uncle Tom Walsh sent away for a dozen eggs for us and got a bakers dozen--13. Maybe he knew something we didn't know. We got 13 pullets. Anconas. Had never heard of them before. They laid big white eggs and could fly like birds. George "Junior" Freund hasn't given me much trouble this season since his beloved Cubs have been anything but spectacular. Now, "Junior" has gone so far as to say, "I have to give your White Sox credit -- they didn't have 18 batters strike out in one game". With both the Cubs and Sox down this year, it has been too peaceful* in local circles. Hiis rule about a man not wearing a straw hat after Labor Day is a lot of hooey. We are slow in making changes at our house. When Mazie Buss thoughtfully phoned to tell us Chuck Hiller was on a TV program, Alvina explained we didn't have cable TV. It reminded me of a time when a man came to our door and explained how he found our house. Said he met a young boy downtown who said he was our son when he sought directions. He related that the boy told him to drive up Green Street until he saw the only house without a TV antenna and that would be the place. Right now some of the programs they tried to sell us would be hard to take. Every man to his own fancy. Just returned from an impressive program, the rededication of the John­ sburg Rescue Squad building. They didn't have much to work with when the squad was formed 28 years ago. New members have come along through the years with the same dedication - to help others. Bob Meyer, President of the Squad, did a truly bang- up job as the program rolled along smoothly. It was a tear jerker when Mary Debrecht and the Hetterman family accepted special awards. Mentioning that we haven't missed many events in Johnsburg in the last half century (or more), I forgot to add I was a mere child when it first started. ' The enlarged building is very well planned. Now comes a drive for funds to finish payments. Must congratulate the members and the entire community. Cooperation is the key word. Varsity Runners Take 7th In a Add of 17 schools, the McHenry varsity cross country team came in seventh place in the Wauconda Invitational last Saturday. Finishing with 248 points, the best McHenry could do was a seventh place in­ dividual finish by Wade Cepulis at 15:51 in the 2.8- mile course. Gordy Bourney came in at 18:28 for 21st place, while Joe Mullen placed 58th, Joe Bishop ended up 79th and Pat Haderley 81st. Crystal Lake came in first, followed by Antioch and Marian Central. For Marian, Paul Sandell came in fourth overall, while Tom Wottreng took 18th, Brad Gregory came in 25th, Bob Hartmann in 31st, Jeff Wottreng in 32nd and Joe Johnson at 54th. In other varsity meets during the past week, McHenry beat Round Lake, 15-48, but lost to Antioch, 30- 28, on Sept. 4 in Antioch. Wade Cepulis finished third with a 18:55 in 2.8 miles to pace the Warriors. Brian Wright took fifth, Gordy Bourey, sixth, Don Mitacek, seventh, Darren Cepulis, ninth and Joe Mullen, tenth. On Sept. 11, Streamwood defeated the Warriors, 30-25 in McHenry. Europeans who visit this country are invariably appalled at the spectacle of ambulances in waiting, stretchers to carry off the wounded, etc. Pro football is the most exciting of sports, possibly excepting boxing (also ex­ cessively violent). That's be­ cause the danger of serious injury and excessive violence is always present. Spearing is taking a heavy toll, as is the "sand­ wiching" of pass receivers and other forms of brutal physical contact--and these aspects of football must be cleaned up. President Theo­ dore Roosevelt was the first to start cleaning up the game and the process must con­ tinue--until no player is killed or permanently injured in this "sport." All of that not withstand­ ing, the 1980 season prom­ ises to be the best ever. Can the Steelers make it four in a row? Can Dallas, without Roger Staubach, be the team it has been in recent years? Why penalize the girls for being cute and sexy? a calendar of upcoming events Marty Zeller To Coach Marty Zeller, a 1975 graduate and basketball player at McHenry High School, has been named assistant basketball coach at New Mexico Military In­ stitute in Roswell, New Mexico. " Zeller, who played basketball at the military school from 1975-1977, went on to play for the Baylor Bears were he posted a 10- point-per-game mark and averaged 15 rebounds per contest.
