A McHenry man was charged with two traffic violations after the van he was driving twice struck the rear of another vehicle. Diane E. Weingart, of 713 Broadway, McHenry, was driving north on Route 31 vvhen her car began to stall thje to engine problems. Ms. Weingart told police her car was struck in the rear twice by a van bearing the license plates "YC 404." The driver of the van, Michael J. Troka, of 3213 S. Waterview, McHenry, said he did not recall being in an accident. Troka was cited for driving with a revoked license and leaving the scene of an accident. The incident occurred at 4:45 p.m. Sept. 16. Amy M. Horak, of 912 Main street. Spring Grove, told police she fell asleep at the wheel of her car, which went off Route 173 and struck an earthen em­ bankment. The Horak vehicle was spotted by the Hebron Rescue squad, which was returning to the village. The accident occurred at 1:10 a.m. Sept. 15. In a similar accident, George K. Morris, of 4017 Seneca, Wonder Lake, fell asleep at the wheel of his car and struck a stop sign. Morris was ticketed for failure to report an accident to police. The collision occurred at 6 a.m. Sept. 13. David K. Aldenbrook, of 3716 N. St. John's avenue, McHenry, was stopped behind another vehicle on southbound Route 31 when the car he was driving was struck in the rear. The driver of the other car, Diane J. Kofler, of 5605 Woodland, McHenry, saw the stopped auto and applied the brakes, but the car slid on the wet pavement. The accident occurred at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 16. Blood Drive Sept. 22 At Lutheran Church The Aurora Area Blood Bank and McHenry Lions club are sponsoring a Community Blood drive. The hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 and the location is Zion Lutheran church, Rt. 120. Interested persons should call the chairperson, Chris Bremer, at 385-2853 for more information. The Aurora Area Blood Bank services 18 hospitals in an eight-county area, and provides blood for ap­ proximately 2,500,000 residents. Because of blood drives like this being held in Acid Rain, one of the most important environmental problems to be faced in the '80s, will be the topic of a program sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the McHenry county Farm Bureau building, 11909 McConnell road, Woodstock. Lou Marchi of the Defenders will present a slide program entitled "Acid Rain: the Choice is Ours". This will be followed by David Lueck of the Great Lakes program office of the U . S . E n v i r o n m e n t a l Protection agency who will describe the comprehensive network of monitoring stations proposed for the Great Lakes area, in order to observe and record the quality of rain: pesticide and heavy metal content, as w?ll as acidity. In addition to polluting lakes, rivers, and streams, killing fish, corroding metal and wood, and con­ taminating drinking water, acid rain has also been found to-lower the yield and quality of agricultural products such as soy beans. Damage to automobile and house paint, and severe corrosion of marble and cement struc­ tures have also been at­ tributed to acid rain. Exhaust gases from smelters, coal and oil-fired power plants, automobiles and trucks, are chemically changed in the atmosphere and return to the earth as acid rain.
