/ All Meals On Menu --Entertainment- FRIDAY ft SAT. 9 PM OFF THE WALL Come Dance & Have a Good Time Tonight The Warriors of Coach Joe Schlender will open Fox Valley play tonight when they play host to the Crystal Lake South Gators at Mc- Cracken field. With two wins on the season the Warriors will be ready for the visiting Gators of Coach Bob Hight. They will also be remembering that disappointing 13 to 7 overtime defeat last season at the hands of the Crystal Lake crew. Although the Gators have lost both non-conference games, they cannot be taken lightly. Led by speedster, Bob Jewel, the Gators can scoVe from any place on the field. The Murphy brothers, Steve the field general, and John a speedy end, give the Gators a potent passing attack. The Gator line is not very big, but they have speed. The Warriors are hale and healthy after their win over Grant, 27 -7 last Friday night, itle running of Rob Kalck, Dave D'Angelo and John Doessel, along with the outstanding offensive line play, has to bring smiles to the coaching staff. It will be another test for the Warriors, but if they can maintain their fine play over the past two weeks, they could notch another win on the season. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Prep Round-up Golf ~ Defeating Crystal Lake Central, 154-182, the Warrior golf squad continued their eight-match winning streak thus far in 1980. Big hitters for McHenry included Mike Bauml and Kirk Barnicle who each carded a 38. Mike Lawler and Steve Svec had 39 each while Joe Bauml netted a 40. The sophomore golf team also won, by a score of 198-203. Randy Buenzli led the locals with a 44. The Hurricane golfers lost to Marmion at Fox Valley Country Club last Friday, 169-173. John Leucht fired a steady 39, while Tom McMahon and Jeff Schaefer carded a 44 each. Ron Nye shot a 46. The varsity is now 0-2 in the West Suburban Catholic Conference and 1-4 overall. Volleyball The McHenry girl volleyballers handed it to Antioch Tuesday night in West Campus gymnasium, winning two straight games, 15-6 and 15-12. Joan Stelmeck and Pam West played excellent volleyball, especially when the score was clo6e, in pacing the Warriors. The Frosh-Soph squad also beat Antioch, 15-10 and 16-14. Breaking a two-match losing streak, the Marian volleyball team beat Marengo convincingly, 15-1 and 15-5 last Monday. Holly Ryan served 12 points in a row during the second game, while Paddy Guerin had six points as did Linda Aim. Marian lost to Montini last Friday, however, as the Hurricanes missed a total of 19 serves in three games. Sandy Kasting had 6 points, Jacky Weber had five points and Paddy Guerin had three points in the loss. Marian is now 0-2 in conference play and 2-2 overall. C. -- Russian sports competitors in the recent Olympics ran away with the show and were more dominant than any na tion's entrants have ever been, even those of the U.S. in the immediate post-war years. Of course, U.S. entrants would have taken a number of medals but no one thinks they would have collected more than the Russians. The USSR total was 80 golds, 70 silvers and 47 bronze medals. That is almost four times as many as the athletes of Great Britain, Italy and France combined-the major western nations in attend ance. Even more eye-open- ing is the fact that the east ern, communist nations dominated the games. The top medal winners, in order, were Russia-197, East Ger many (population 17,000,- 000) 126, Bulgaria (popula tion 9,000,000)--40, Hungary (population 10,500,000)-32, Poland--31 and Romania-25. Not a western nation won as many total medals as any of these top six nations, and little Cuba won more medals than any western country ex cept Great Britain. Cuba won 20 and Britain 21 medals. All of which shows that the competition in the Olym pics is not even or fair, any longer, by western stand ards. The communist coun tries take on sports programs as national government pro jects and they are running away with the honors, and reaping much propaganda hay. That's what's causing talk today of a free-world games. TOTAL CONCENTRATION-resulted in a nice set by Deb Bauer during the Warriors trouncing of Antioch Tuesday evening. The final scores read, Elgin Larkin, 106, McHenry 81 and Zion Benton, 73. Toni Weyland, a senior who already holds McHenry records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, added the 200-yard freestyle to her list by posting a time of 2:22.5 in the event. On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt Joe Schlender's Warriors made an impressive showing last Friday night at Grant when they tamed the Bulldogs 27 to 7. It has been several years since the Warriors won two in a row, especially the first two games of the season. With any kind of decent weather tonight, the home stands should be filled to capacity and then some. A large following was at Grant last week, and more are expected tonight. The Gators always have a good following, and it should be quite a game. Field Hockey, swimming and volleyball are getting under way this week, so by next week we should have some girls activities to report to you. "Hutch's" sophomore cross country team won the Wauconda Invitational last Saturday for the fourth year in a row, and the sophomores will be at the Hoffman Estate Invitational next Tuesday. With a lot of underclassmen, Gary Gray's tennis team is finding the going a bit tough, but are showing improvement in every match. The Warriors got some state mention in Class 4-A. The Woodsotck Blue streaks rank 4th and the Crystal Lake Tiger 5th. This will change tonight. Chuck Cuda's McHenry golf team is undefeated and will be at the Crown Invitational tomorrow at Randall Oaks golf club. Next Thursday they travel to Crystal Lake to take on the Gators from South, in what could be the match of the decade. Both teams are excellent, and are favorites in the Fox Valley. The crystal ball really got smashed last week. I'm wondering if the Fox Valley is that weak, or if the Northwest Suburban is more balanced. Crown didn't play St. Francis as scheduled, but took on a powerhouse from Plainfield and lost 48 to 0. Anyway, the Warriors and Woodstock kept me from getting shut out, so with the opening play in the Valley, I'll pick Woodstock over the Tigers. In the past 2 years I picked the Streaks, only to see them lose, but I think Bob Bradshaw has been pointing for this one for a year, and he will have his Streaks ready for the Tigers. The Warriors to continue on their winning ways. Spirit is high, no noticeable injuries, and they still remember that overtime loss to the Gators last year. Cary to defeat Dundee. Neil Britt is one of the top signal callers in the conference, and he passes on three of four downs. Dundee is too slow to handle the Trojans and their passing attack. Jacobs the defending co-champs, who went to the playoffs last year, and have looked miserable in their two outings over Crown in a real toss up. In the first two games neither team had much scoring punch, and this may go into many overtimes. PAGE • - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1», 1980 PERFECT PLACEMENT-of a tricky "dink shot" Is executed by Donna Chester, (number 32) an all-conference volleyball letterman who looked to the left, then placed the ball gently to the right, in the middle of four stunned Antioch players. The point occured in the second of two wins for the Warriors over Antioch Tuesday at West Campus. Watching in the foreground is (number 22) Krista Kaefer. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Warrior Swimmers Set Two New Records Another letterman, Terri Blume also broke her own previous record in the 100- yard backstroke with a new time of 2:14.6. The medley relay team of Blume, Diane Johnson, Rosy Nangle and Robin Loss also tied a previous pool record by taking a second place at 2:14.1. Other first place finishes for McHenry were recorded by Terri Blume in the 50- yard freestyle with a time of 27.8, Toni Weyland in the 100- yard freestyle with a 1:02.2 Host C.L. and Heidi Dass with a 7:03.5 in the 500-yard freestyle competition. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Daniel Johnson, Robin Loss, Heidi Dass and Toni Weyland also took a first, swimming in a time of 4:32.3. McHenry's next home meet is on Sept. 20 against Streamwood and Jefferson. Joel Wakitsch Warriors i
