(Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - K i d s , V i o l e n c e a n d Television.") In an effort to reassure parents concerned about the influence of violence on T. V., t h e n e t w o r k s h a v e a t - ^ tempted to explain that the vicarious experience of watching violent behavior provides a healthy outlet for children. They further ex plain that the moral of most of the police and violent "comedy" shows teach children right from wrong. Of course, the argument is totally without basis in fact, and it is obvious that violence on T.V. attracts viewers, which in turn at tracts sponsors. Television producers are not acting in the best interest of children (or anyone else) but are quite simply trying to make as much money as possible. The real disservice is not that the violence has con tinued, but that they have managed to persuade people that it is allright for children to watch it, that they will remain unaffected, or even that they will be better for having watched it. Children are not born with aggressive, acting out im pulses. This behavior, if it takes place, is a learned behavior. There is no aggressive instinct that must be channeled in a socially acceptable manner, or dissipated by passively watching violence. Violent behavior is learned by watching violent behavior. A child learns to hit other people either by getting hit himself, or watching people hit others. Children learn by imitation. As the majority of children spend four hours a day watching T.V., they will imitate that violence. It is difficult to say "no" to a child when they cannot understand why you are saying "no", but allowing children to watch "The Incredible Hulk", "Vega$", and the more violent cartoon shows is a passive en dorsement of violent acting out behavior. It does little good to write letters to the networks complaining about violence on T.V.; they are only giving people what they want to see.
