Jf&y, V \ So 1 Hear The worst part of political campaigns is they last too long. On July 6, 1928, the first talking movie picture was demonstrated in New York. Bet you didn't know that. I wouldn't either if I hadn't looked it up. A1 Jolson appeared in the first talkie in these parts so some of use drove to Waukegan to hear and see, "Sonny Boy". At the party for retiring City of McHenry employees, Fred Meyer, George Diedrich and the late Ralph Wagner, George was recalling times he used to come into my office for this or that. One time when energy saving was starting to take the country by storm, George came in and plunked his large frame into a chair and announced he was saving energey--his own! Trying to think of something to write about, the thought occurred to tune in the Chicago Bears- Pittsburgh Steeler game. What a horrible thought! Weren't the Bears rated as division champions this year? You could never guess it by watching them against class teams. The Bears look so hopeless that I go so far as to turn on the Cubs-Pirates game. The Sox aren't on TV today. Just in case you are wondering. As grandma used to say, we got an "invite" to visit the Bill and Signa Molnaire home one afternoon last week. Bill had some pictures taken at the last McHenry Day in Florida. He also had some good pictures of their residence, swimming pool and beautiful grounds in Iverness, Fla. Bill's wife, Signa, served what was supposed to be a snack. Man, that was a delicious snack! It was one of the most pleasant afternoons we nave spent in a long time. Nice people to visit. Our social calendar had us joining a crowd at the Pistakee Yacht Club where a reception was held for a fine young couple. Brian Lund picked a pretty little girl, Cindy Miller, as his bride. Besides meeting friendly people, the bounteous spread didn't do anything to reduce my wasteline. Brian says he still has a writeup which appeared in S.I.H. when he was in eighth grade. With Brian's height, and having heard through the grapevine that his father was some shakes as a basketball player, I had high hopes of the McHenry Warriors finally getting a big center. Unfortunately an injury sidelined Brian in high school and it set his progress back. The Cubs wound up their home stand with a victory over the Pirates after a real donny brook. Not even the wildest Cub fan can say the Pirates didn't get a lousy call on a third strike when the picture clearly showed the batter had swung all the way around. The Pirates knew the pennant was hopeless for them so were storming when the next batter got a triple to win the game. I have never been ip favor of replays to determine the umpries' decision -- not since I saw two different camera shots on a play at second base. However, replays have some merit when you see a call like that third strike. If such a call is in your favor, you just sit back and watch the fun. If it is against you, the blood pressure goes up. Mrs. Lester D. Bacon celebrated her birthday Sunday evening. You don't ask a lady her age, especially where there is only one lighted candle on the treat at her table. We just say Happy Birtday and may another candle be added a year from today. PICKUPS: Wouldn't it be nice to be as sure of anything as some people are of everything? Mark Twain once wrote on the envelope addressed to his wife: "Opened by mistake to see what was inside." Hornets Win 20-6 Sunday at McCracken Field, the McHenry Hornets heavyweight team beat Fox Lake, 20-6, which marked the fourth year in a row that McHenry has beat Fox Lake. The first McHenry touch down of the game was scored by Bill Howard on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Craig Hiel. Hiel kicked the extra point. Hiel later ran 17 yards for the second Hornet touch down with John Diedrich putting the extra point on the board to mak? the score, 14- 0. Hiel was not through, however, as he later ran for a 33-yard score. The extra point was missed, and the score ended at 20-6. Kevin Banato led the Hornets in tackles along with Pat Gorneak. Next week, the Hornets travel to Antioch where the lightweights, who lost 26-0 against Fox Lake, start at 12:45 and the heavyweights following. t * THE BROKEN STRING--Is in progress as the sophomore cross country team of McHenry High School leads the pack up the hill during the three-mile frosh-soph contest last Thursday at McHenry West Campus. The frosh-soph Warriors beat Woodstock in the meet, with Ave of the first six finishers turning out to be McHenry runners. The victory broke a 163- meet winning streak held by the Woodstock varsity, frosh- soph and girls team combination. See today's Prep Roundup for more details. That first contest with the New York Baseball Club took place at Elysian Field in Hoboken, N.J., on June 19, 1846. Three seasons later the Knickerbockers became the first team to be outfitted uniformly, in blue and white suits. At the time of its first game, though, there were no standard baseball rules. Each team supplied its own ball, which often varied in size, elasticity and com position. • * * An exciting moment in American baseball history occurred when Don Larsen of the American League's New York Yankees pitched the first perfect no-hit, no- run, no-walk World Series game. It happened Oct. 8, 1956, in the fifth game of the World Series played with the National League's Brooklyn Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. The final score was New York 2, Brooklyn 0. LANDING A GRANDDADDY-is Plaindealer photographer Wayne Gaylord who displays his winning entry in the Plaindealer "biggest fish" contest. After capturing three,. nine inch channel cats, Gaylord hooked this 26V4-inch beauty. Using an ultra light rod and reel, he baited his hook with a night crawler and found the prize in an abandoned gravel pit near McHenry. Gaylord's entry was later disqualified from the imaginary contest after it was found that he sometimes works for the paper. STAFF PHOTO-ANTHONY OLIVER sAye? REMODELING?
