Q. If a person has a private health insurance policy, is there any need for medical insurance coverage under Medicare? A. Many private health insurance companies provide coverage only to supplement Medicare. They recommend that their policyholders sign up for the medical insurance part of medicare to get full protection. Before making a decision about health in surance coverage, a person should contact his or her insurance agent to find out what their private insurance will cover after becoming eligible for Medicare. Q. What does Medicare pay towards a person's hospital expenses? A. From the first through the sixtieth day in each benefit period, Medicare hospital insurance pays for all covered services except the first $180. This amount is the hospital insurance deductible. From the sixty- first through the ninetieth day in a benefit period, hospital insurance pays for all covered services except for $45 a day. Q. Is it necessary to be receiving Social Security benefits or to have worked ; under Social Security in • order to receive sup plemental security income (SSI) payments? A. No. A person may be eligible for SSI even if he or she has never worked undfcr Social Security. Many persons receive SSI who are not eligible for any kind of Social Security benefit. BUDDY'S WORKSHOP Prevent Auto Rusting We cannot afford to replace the family car for a few nt< years. In the meantime, how can I prevent the body from rust until we can Finance a new one? If you're trying to make your old car last a few more yea you probably know that one thing that will hasten its demi is rust. But, rust can be prevented by simple, regular mainte nance. To help prevent corrosion, follow these simple measures: Keep your car clean -- wash it frequently and wax it at least twice a year. Thoroughly hose down the undersides of the car at least twice a year if you live in an area where sand and salt are used on the roads. Do it midway through winter and at winter's end. Make sure the drain holes in the bottom of the car doors are kept open. After washing your car, inspect it periodically and, if you notice extreme weakness or deterioration of any structural members, have a welding shop strengthen the weakened area. When you buy a new car, consider having it professionally rustproofed before you actually get the car. A professional rust- proofing involves treatment of all areas particularly prone to rust including the inside of doors, rocker panels, etc. What can be done to keep paper from peeling off the bath room walls? After showering, beads of water form on the ceil ing and walls? The only solution would be to install an inexpensive ventilating fan. If the problem is not corrected, the moisture can penetrate into the structural work such as studs, joists or rafters and possibly cause the paint to peel on the outside of the house.
