Traffic , on Friday's , Saturday's and Sunday's in town are usually hectic, to say the least, and now with the extra push to get the shopping done early, traffic is twice as bad as usual Although the holidays usually put us in a happy mood, and everyone wants to get their chores done, we can easily forget to exercise basic good sense and safety, and run into our neighbors in our zeal to get the shopping done; and I don't mean a casual chance meeting. I want everyone to enjoy this time, of year in one piece, so ret's all of us be 10 percent more careful than we normally would be and we can all be together with our loved ones over the next few weeks If you want to do something really nice, continue that 10 percent extra margin of caution through 1981 and beyond and we'll all be better off for it. I see where the Otts on Main street have once again beautifully decorated their yard for everyone's en­ joyment. They have set up their display every year for the past 6 years I've been working here, and I'm sore they set it up before I arrived, and it always reminds me of how close that special day is and to get myself ready. Many other people in town put up displays, and I'm sure that the kids would get a kick out of seeing all the gaily decorated bouses. Christmas is supposed to be for kids but we're all children at this time of the year, so well all get a bang out of the drive, One last thing, we're all getting a little sloppy about the condition of our cars and trucks, and we're getting a lot of warning tickets for one headlight or tailight out, or loud muffler, etc.. A new form of the same column was inspired by a souvenir picture booklet which made its appearance between 1912 and 1915. It was given to the Plaindealer by Herbert H. Freund, and contains several scenes of the early days in McHenry which whould have appeal both for those who remember and those who feel they would like to become better acquainted with the community as it was in the early days. Not many now living in McHenry will recall that Orchard Beach once had a country club. Pledge Improvement Of Services To Children Culmination of the 1980 Illinois White House Con­ ference on Children, held in Springfield, was ratification and approval of the draft of the Statewide document by voting delegates from across Illinois. The 150 page document was the result of 18 months of effort on the part of members of the eight regional committees, the Statewide committee, the Illinois Council of Youth, the Illinois Commission on Children and resource persons. Delegates to the conference were drawn from these groups. Police Alert Citizens Alert bulletins are prepared as a public service by the McHenry County Sheriff's Police Crime Prevention section under the direction of Sheriff Henry Nulle. Burglaries: there were 9 burglaries reported this past week, ending Nov. 28. Six of these were to homes, two were to businesses and one was to a vehicle. Entry was made in four cases through unlocked doors, one was through a locked door and four were by force to windows. The most common items taken were: tape recorders, calculators, radios, starters, hand tools, wrenches, hammers, pliers, currency in coins and bills, turntables, tire riffis, snow tires, lawn tractors, air compressors, circular saws and blades. The known value of the reported missing items was $7,368.68. The hardest hit areas were areas bordering Crystal Lake, McHenry, Woodstock and Marengo. The document dealt with improvement of services to children in the next 10 years. The delegates recommended that public funds be used only for public schools because of the difficulty of funding education with shrinking tax dollars. The conference report suggests that juvenile courts should continue to have respon­ sibilities to serve youths who run away. The delegates also voted that services to pregnant teenagers and to single parent families should be expanded. In addition, the delegates, recommended that one agency should be responsible for coordinating the planning of the various state agencies serving the children of Illinois. Governor James R. Thompson, in his address to the delegates, pledged that the needs of children would be given top proprity for the decade of the '80's by his present administration and by his next administration if he is reelected. Thompson announced a special in­ vestigative unit is being formed in the Illinois Department of Law En­ forcement to lead an attack on the criminal dumping of hazardous wastes in Ulinois\ The new Law Enforcement unit will include 25 agents and related equipment at a cost of about $1.4 million a year.
