4.1 HKIJMN<; PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystol Lake. Illinois 60014 •(•15)459-2641 PAWS WILDLIFE COMMITTEE OFF AND RUNNING! A cornerstone to any success or even modest inroads by our Wildlife committee in behalf of the wildlife that shares our world must be public education. Our small group can accomplish very little if the rest of the community is unaware or unconcerned. Part of the educational effort can be through column, part by publicity such as the leghold trap posters, and part can best be done in the schools, where many early attitudes are shaped to last a lifetime. We are embarking on a program this year in con junction with the Animal Protection . Institute of America which utilizes the organization's regional director as a speaker arafa film, "The Empty Ark: 2002". The movie is a documentary narrated by William Shatner of "Star Trek" which takes the viewer on a 500 year trip scanning the American past. and future. It shows how, although many poor choices have been made regarding our animals, there is still hope and we do not have to look forward to a barren planet if we take action now. A.P.I, quotes several methods we all can use against the problems cited in the film. 1. "Raise your voice against commercial ex ploitation of animals for furs, oils, and other products when substitutes would do as well. 2. Take cases of cruelty, neglect, and abandonment to local authorities charged with enforcement of the law. 3. Guard against over- breeding of unwanted pets in crowded cities. But fight annihilation of thinning species by unchecked, poorly planned, destructive misdevelopment of wildlife regions and natural resources. 4. When driving, take care to avoid wilderness ac cidents. Deer, elk and many smaller animals forage near highways, and keeping your speed down can save their lives and yours. 5. Be in touch with the effect your community is having on animal life. More animals are killed by. ac cident as a result of poor policy than by eagerness to slaughter." The entire school program will be about an hour in length each 'time it is ' presented to students (fourth grade and up) We may not get to all the schools, but it will be a beginning. Also, other programs will be developed for younger children at a later date. Look for us!
