STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Plaindealer D McHenry To Host Cage Doubleheader Fresh from a second place in the Sycamore Holiday tournament, Ken Ludwig's Warriors will host Cary Grove tonight and Grant tomorrow night in a doubleheader weekend of basketball. The Warriors, with three games under their belts, are looking forward to the weekend contests. They played three pretty good ball games last week, and showed the old moxie by coming from behind to beat Belvidere in overtime in the semi-finals. In the finals against Sterling, they were simply outclassed by a better ball club. The Trojans of Cary Grove under Jim Condill have split in their four games this season. Two lettermen are returning.Scott Etters a 6'2" forward, and football end, 6'0" Grant Barry. A newcomer to the Trojan squad who has looked good in the early season is 6*0" Bob Dhanes. Missing from the squad is their all- conference guard of last year, Greg Meyer who could shoot with the best of them at any time. Also lost to an injury is Hugh Brennan, a 6*4" center, who could really muscle his way around the basket. Coach Condill thinks this will be the best shooting team he has had at Cary, and if that is the case the Warrior defense will have to buckle down and really go to work. On Saturday night an old foe, the Grant Bulldogs, will come to town. Coach Tom Maple's crew won the Harvard tourney last weekend, and trounced Woodstock 65 to 46 in the process. Not much is known about any Grant individuals, but when these teams meet, it is always a ball game. Johnsburg Conference Play Starts With North Boone The Johnsburg Skyhawks take a 3-1 record into its first conference game, a home bittle against North Boone oty Friday night. Although coach Bob Kies iks Marengo to finish atop i Shark Conference, he has enty of respect for North >ne. "North Boone has a big team. In fact, not one of the five starters is under 6' 1"," Kies said. The Skyhawks will probably throw a man-to man at North Boone, ac cording to Kies, but he said that he will be ready to switch to a zone or use a press if needed. In the first four games, Tom Pieper and Rick Neiss have taken over the roll as scorers in the Johnsburg attack. Pieper, a junior, has averaged 16.2 points per game, scoring 65 total points while Neiss has averaged 15.7 points in his four games. Frank Jakubicek has only averaged 8 points per game, but has handled the rebounding, grabbing 13 total rebounds in the final game of the Round Lake Tournament. Chuck Novy also pulled down 13 rebounds in the last game and has averaged 10 points per game as he has been platooned with junior Jeff Bartmann, who has dumped in 6 points per game from his forward position. Small Russ Beck has also played well from his guard position so far, averaging 7.5 points per contest. Although Johnsburg has had early trouble against the press, Kies said that ex perience will take care of that. "Most of these kids haven't seen varsity action or the press too much, so as they get the experience, they should be able to cope with it," Kies said. North Boone is 1-2 on the season so far, losing to Oregon and Burlington and beating Eerie in the early going of 1960. Joel Wakitsch Snowmobiles To Raise Money The Harmony Snowmobile Club again will be spon soring the annual "Rescue 50" benefitting the John sburg and McHenry Rescue Squads, on Jan. 11, 1961 with the snow date being Jan. 18. As in the past, snowmobilers riding in the "Rescue 50" will be asking for pledges to help the benefit. Citizens can con tribute to this worthy cause by contacting a snowmobiler and helping to raise funds for the local rescue squads. Deerfield held an early advangage in this popular tourney, winning under coach Fred Dickman in 1971- 72-73, but McHenry came back in 1974 under Gary Collins, and again in 1975 before Schaumburg won in 1976. McHenry has won in two of the last three years, under Bill Blankenhorn in 1977 and Pat Wirtz in 1979. Schaumburg took the championship for its second time in 1978. Two of the records of the tournament are held by Tom Stark, a husky McHenry forward in 1972, who scored 32 points in one game in cluding 13 field goals and six • free throws. Joel Wakitsch I Immaculate Conception Ends Marian Season Immaculate Conception ended the Marian Central spikers' season at 25-8-1 Monday night, as they defeated the Hurricanes, 15- 13, 15-2 in Lisle Super- sectional action. The Hurricanes came back from a 13-6 deficit in game one as the serving of Jackie Weber brought the score up to 13-13. I. C. took over and scored on a brilliant serve, but Marian held off the final point until they were called for touching the net. The game ended at 15-13. In game two, Marian never got it going, as I. C.'s Cheryl Martino started the game by serving seven straight points. Coach Mary Stoner said that the run of seven points "just had a negative effect on us and we couldn't get it back." Sandi Kasting led Marian with three points and five sideouts, while Jackie Weber had five points, and Paddy Guerin had one point and four sideouts. Linda Aim and Betsy Powers each collected three points in the losing cause. Immaculate Conception again will compete for the state crown at Normal on Thursday after finishing second last year. ~4PW "Yk»i ' , .
