Others call it a pain in the neck. What child doesn't love snow? Good packin' snow is great for snowballs. Snowmen are also a delight. Years back it was sport to go flippin' bobs. Haven't seen a bobsled in years. They were a necessity before snow plows. The wheels of the old flivver were put up on jacks, the radiator drained and the entire car covered with a big sheet. It was put back into use in the spring season. Our granddaughter, Aleen, rushed us to the window to see a robin this week. On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The basketball season gets into full swing tonight when the Warriors play host to the Cary Grove Trojans, and then tomorrow night the Grant Bulldogs invade Buckner gym. The Warriors didn't do too bad a job last week in Sycamore. Finishing second in that tourney has to be a feather in their caps, as no Warrior team had advaned that far in the years they attended the tournaments. They are going to have to add to their scoring punch, as fifty or so points a game isn't going to win them many in the Fox Valley this season. Would like to give you fans a rundown on what to expect in the Fox Valley conference this season, as there is some mighty fine basketball players in our area, as well as teams. Everyone's pick to cop the title is Crown high school. Coach Jim Hinkle has been waiting for this season for the past three years. All Everything Gary Gliesman, the 6'6" forward-center and probably the outstanding player in the entire area, is back for his fourth and final season on the varsity. Four other regulars from last season will join him. Mike Szepanski is now 6'7" and much improved over last season. The floor general and hot shooter, at least against the Warriors is Kevin Kepp. Leroy Leske and Nate Linhart round out the starting five. The Vikings have their eyes set on the Super Sectional as their goal for the season. Two teams may give the Vikings a little trouble. Coach Ken Slimco's Jacobs Golden Eagles have the size and experience to give anyone trouble. They romped Elgin Larkin last week 102 to 52.\Joe Schaefer, an all-conference player last season, at 6'6>£" and Mark Ault another 6'6" player give the Eagles a rebounding duo. John Turskey, Mike Corriveau and John Lipinsky all lettermen round out the regular five for Slimco. Our good friend Gary Collins down at Crystal Lake South will be heard from again this season. The Gators along with Jacobs could give Crown some trouble. Curt Walor a 6'6" center is back again for another season, and Randy Salerno, a 6'3" forward. These two will be the brunt of the Gator attack. Jim Goodwin, Jeff Mitby and Steve Murphy round out the team. We all know that Collins will win a few games just on his coaching ability alone this season. A new coach and a lot of basketball talent in Woodstock, which I think will be the surprise team in the league this season. Jack Renkens formerly <of Arizona is the new mentor at Woodstock, and the Streaks will be big and hard to beat. Chuck Lundstrom at 6'7" along with 6*4" Scott Ritzert who can jump like a seven footer, will give the Streaks all the rebounding they need. Joe Leahy a steady ball player will be back from last season, an all- conference player, he can score from anywhere on the court Look for the Streaks to be the sleeper this year in the Fox Valley. Another new coach Arnie Kay at Crystal Lake Central, has his Tigers off and running this season. 6*6" Jim Teuber is the main cog in the Tiger machine, along with Brian Pilgard, a 6'3" guard. Scott Beck, a junior, has been a mainstay in the early season, and the Tigers will improve on their 6 and 8 record last year. Dundee under Coach Paul Judson will not repeat as champions this year. With only one regular back from last season, Scott Meyer a 6'3" forward, the Cards will find it difficult to win this season. Kurt Schuring and Bill Caubre saw limited action last season, and with newcomers Jeff Killough and Blair Johnson round out the starting five for the Cards. Cary Grove minus Greg Meyer will find it tougher than ever this year. The Trojans should be more of a team this season, they still lack the necessary ingredients to be contenders for the title. These are the seven teams the Warriors will have to battle. The Warriors will be at a height disadvantage in almost every game, plus a lot of experience. C. ~ One of the unique features of U.S. football, both pro and college, is the uncertainty of the outcome of most games. Mississippi State can upset Alabama. Cincinnati can beat the Steelers twice in a few weeks. One reason for this is that physical injury plays such a big role in U.S. football. Mental attitude is more im­ portant, it's true, but if key players are hurting, or out, the odds are not the same. That's not often a deciding factor in baseball, for ex­ ample. On a recent Saturday both UCLA and Bama were knocked off unexpectedly. They were number two and one, respectively, in the col­ lege ratings. After that, Notre Dame's fans rightly laid claim to being number one, and if the Irish get by the Tide (which may have happened by the time you read this) and then Southern California, they will be number-one at the end of the year. Teams like Oklahoma, Nebraaka, Texas, etc., are capable of beating any team in the nation on a given day. That's why they-and the Irish-are so often invited to the bowls. Georgia will likely go to a major bowl this year; the Bulldogs don't play Alabama. Ohio State is again a power, as is Penn State. But as of now, it looks like Notre Dame has the best shot at number-one ranking, and that wonld be a good send-off for Dan Devine, in Ms last year at the helm. Donkeys Basketball A Donkey Basketball exhibition will kick into action at Johnsburg High School, as the McHenry County College ̂ Newman Club will sponsor a battle between MCC students and staff members.
