The doctor will see you in a few minutes." So, I picked up a magazine to pass away those "few minutes". First item I saw was about a wife pestering her husband to have the snow tires taken off. Whoops! It was an April magazine. We mentioned it was about time for Mayme Buss to send us another poem. She didn't let us down. Now, read this: With tongue in cheek and a tiny grin, Am very fine for the shape I'm in. As the years pass swiftly I've learned to know That "older" is the only thing I'm able to grow. Again I send my wishes sincere and true That '81 will be good to you. Hunger strikes don't strike me as a good way to help a i cause. A day without nourishment and I'd be too > weak to help anybody. SUDDEN THOUGHT: What happened to detachable collars for men's shirts? First they wore the hard ones that only a laundry could clean. Then came soft collars. The theory was that just because you had a dirty neck the whole shirt didn't have to be washed. To several sports fans with whom I have discussed the actions of our cheering section at the Woodstock high school basketball game, the opinion seems to be that the Woodstock Sentinel gave McHenry what was deser ved. The story referred to our cheering section holding up a banner during the game that read "Give Peace A Chance". When a Woodstock player stepped up to shoot two critical free throws at the end of the game, our section stood up, (looted, hollered, waved their hands, and did everything to distract the shooter. One observer noted that the Woodstock crowd was quiet when our boys shot free throws. Good sportsmanship in McHenry is being questioned by many local fans. They don't like the image. On Saturday, we attended a Christmas party at the home of our Irish pal, Lucille Geraty. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were there in great numbers. Every time I turned around, I saw one of the Coughlins - one nicer than the other. There were darling babies, pretty girls - young men and ladies - all with that wholesome look. Of course, there were many present who are not relatives. This group was headed by Petie Schaefer, 85 years old and planning for his 90th birthday party. As we entered the door, Ruth Stuessy and Don Peasley were the first persons we saw. Ruth's brother, Dick Jahn, who lives in the same building with Toney, was busy ser ving goodies. Dick is em ployed in the Gies shoe store. In addition to the Roskie family, the McCrackens, long time friends of Toney, were there. So were some former athletes, Clem Berg, Bob Vieregg and Wally Parker. Others had been tehre and left before our arrival. In the U-and-under group, awards were received by McHenry's Sabrina Sliwiak with a 6.20 on the uneven bars (6th place) and M c H e n r y ' s J e n n i f e r Huemann with a 7.05 on the floor excercise (second place). In the 12-14 age group, Michelle Landis of McHenry had a 8.00 for third place, while Karyn Althoff, also of McHenry, collected a 7.10 for sixth place. McHenry's Sue Russell and Michelle Landis tied for fifth place in the uneven bars with a 6.10, while Landis also won third place in the floor excercise with a 7.60 and Melanie Smith had a 7.50 for fourth place. Karyn Altyhoff received a fifth with a 7.35 and Sue Russell was sixth with a 7.30. Overall, Michelle Landis was second with a 28.35 as Lake Region YMCA ended the competition with 138 points in contrast to Tum bling On with 134.75 and Starke with 114. period action at Crystal Lake last Friday. Crystal Lake T>all was called. -WAYNE GAYLORD players soon joined Costigan and a jump ball was called. STAFF PHOTO-t friend Toney. . Not many in the field of athletics have enjoyed the esteem and respect earned by Toney Roskie. He was a good athlete, a fine coach and a great influence in building character. People came from all parts of the county to show they haven't forgotten their friend -- a real man. The Aerialeets of Lake Region YMCA gymnastic team, participated in a United States Gymnastic Federation meet against the Schaumburg Tumbling On team and the Starke from Berwyn on Saturday, Dec. 12. The YMCA took 17 girls and competed in the 11 and under as well as the 12-14 age group.
