Woods announced more tax rates for various cities and villages in the county. Probably one of the lowest rates for any community is Riley, where the combined rate is $1.87 as compared to $2.17 last year. An increase of seventeen cents is revealed in the McHenry rate, $4.33 to $4.50. In the bowling notes, Petie Schaefer led the K.C.'s with a 540 series. Minnie Green showed that when the chips are down she can go to town. Minnie's sister, Bernice, had a 578 score posted that looked plenty safe for winning the prize turkey. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from (he files of December 15, 1955) Residents of the McHenry High School District 156 went to the polls in four polling places to express themselves in favor of a $1,250,000 bond issue for the erection of an addition to the present school. On the first proposition, concerning the erection of an addition to the school, 555 voters expressed themselves in favor and 224 were opposed. The second proposition on floating the bond issue resulted in 535 favorable votes and 240 :. 17 was chosen as the date for the Hanukkah party which the Jewish Studies Group of McHenry county will nold for entertair children, parents an( visitors, accordiiw to Dr. Lee Gladstone of McHenry, president of the JSG. The Jewish festival of Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration in memory of the Jews' military victory over the Ancient Syrians in Biblical times. Work goes forward on the new junior high school, located 'just west, of Edgebrook school in the south part of the city. A bond issue totalling $630,000 was approved by the voters of District 15 last spring and work on the structure was begun recently. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 24, 1970) A complete new filing system-more responsibility for commanders-and rap sessions for young folks, these were among innovations promised by newly installed Sheriff Art Tyrrell in his first news conference since taking office. He described his feeling at the end of the first week and a half in office as follows: "I am exhausted." McHenry almost doubled the next city in the number of deaths investigated by County Coroner Theron J. Ehorn, according to information contained in his annual report. McHenry recorded 93 deaths which required investigation bv the coroner compared to 43 for Crystal Lake and also for Woodstock. Harvard had 20; Marengo, 9, Wonder Lake, one. The sophomore Warriors continued along their winning ways as they squeezed by Zion Benton, 41- 39. Third Place Sweepstakes Trophy To Speech Team Keith Belzer, Speech team captain, at left, and Tony Lazalde display third place trophy won in recent Dundee invitational tournament and also numerous other trophies won this year. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD McHenry's Speech team returned victoriously from the 22-team Dundee invitational tournament with the third place sweepstakes trophy. For the second consecutive tournament, the winning dramatic duet team of senior, Keith Belzer, and junior, Doug Maris, came home with second place trophy in that event, having captured a third place trophy with the same duet scene at the Crown invitational in November. Senior, Tony Lazalde, again captured top honors with his Original Comedy routine. This was Lazalde's third trophy for the season, having won second place at Crystal Lake in October; third place trophy at Crown in November, and first place at the Dundee invitational in December. Paula Berman, another senior and competitor in Original Comedy, also won honors and a third place trophy jat^a November tournanffc in Woodstock. McHeni^'s speech team is coached by Ms. Gloria Burke, teacher at both East- West campuses. The team meets its next competition in conference and National F o r e n s i c l e a g u e tournaments in January. IHSA district competition will be at Warren high school in February. Other speech team members include Rich Miller, extemporaneous speaking; Larry Kenyon and Patty Schillaci, radio speaking; Anne Lahoti and Snerry Christy, oratory; John Armstrong, verse reading; Mary Higgins and Teri Smith, prose reading; and Lisa Thome, doing humorous interpretation.
