EARl WALSH' PAUK 7 - PLAl.NDEALEIl TtESOAY, DECEMBER St. 11 So I Hear Comment On Sports FOOTBALL By Pete Frttckie WASHINGTON, D. C. -- No one would deny that John McKay is a capable football coach, but his loyalty to his players might sometimes be overdone. And the question in the Tampa Bay area this year is whether that has cost the Bucs a division title. McKay has struck with Doug Williams fanatically this year. Some feel it's be cause of phony race accusa tions. Doug is black and Mc Kay is apparently out to prove critics are racist and he is unbiased. That seems a bit much; even Terry Bradshaw was criticized widely a few years ago. It probably helped make him better. In Williams' case, McKay has had Chuck Fusina on the bench, con- * THE POLISH RIFLE" stantly, even when obvious goofs and mental lapses cost the Bucs games. Williams has a very strong arm and pulls off some senational pass com pletions, and, in at least one game this year, gained ovfcr 400 yards. But he has thrown to the other team's players, failed to throw out of bounds. in the closing seconds, got ten confused about where the stick is, too often missed wide-open receivers, and had melancholy mental lapses all season--and has too fre quently passed very poorly* (His receivers have also been -poor at times.) His Buc teammates are not so dumb they don't see these things. That has af fected team spirit and drive. But McKay seems to think he's fighting a civil rights battle with the critics, in re fusing to take Williams out and giving Fusina a chance. Johnsburg Loses, Wins The Johnsburg Skyhawks lost its opening Hamphire tournament game last Friday, 65-57 against Genoa- Kingston, but came back to beat Quigley North, 69-57 on Saturday afternoon. In the consolation victory against Quigley North, Rick Neiss paced the Skyhawks with 24 points while Russ Beck pumped in 14. The Skyhawks looked like they would blow Quigley out of the gym, racking up 14 points before Genoa- Kingston could score its first bucket. The opponents made a game out of it, however, outscoring Johnsburg, 10-4 throughout the rest of the quarter as Johnsburg led at the buzzer 18-10. Quigley never did make a valid attempt to win the game as Johnsburg held on to a 7-8 point lead throughout and came away with a 69-57 victory. The Skyhawks now play Monday in a consolation game.
