MM Warriors Beat Fremd, Dunked By Crown A slam dunk shot by Mike Ssrepanski with 3:10 remaining in the second period broke up s tightly fought contest ana peved the way to an easy Viking victory Friday night at West camnus by the score of 75 to 40. Until that time the undermanned Warrior* had fought the f the I Rebounding from an embarassing loss to Crown on Friday night, the Warriors of Ken Ludwig scored 21 pts. in the final period to grab a 70 to 61 win over the Fremd Vikingn of Moe Tharp. Until the last quarter output the Warriors held a Vikes on even terms, having been tied at the end of eVik first period at 10 all. With the Vikes leading It to 16, Kevin Kepp, fine Viking guard, lobbed a high pass over the Warrior t high in the through the hoop for a 21 to downhill for the warriors of defense, and with perfect timing air and slammed dunked the ball 16 lead. From then on, it was all u Ken Ludwig, as they held the Warriors scoreless the remaining time of the period, and through the first four minutes of the third frame. In the meantime, the Vikings rode the wave with a flurry of in the third the evening. One would think they were in the Eosemont Horizon wstching Jimmy Connors during the first teams raced up and down the court shooting at " with the lead in the closing seconds 20 to period, ! at will. 34 unanswered points and led 43 to 16 midway period, and on to an easy Fox Valley win. Coach Jim Hinkle showed the Warriors mercy as he immediately took out his starting five for the rest of the evening and let his reserves play the rest of the night. Hie Warriors started out strong and it looked as if an upset was in the making as they grabbed a 10 to 5 lead with 2 minutes remaining in the opening period, but the Vikings roared back and tied it at 10 apiece at the buzzer. The Warrior still held their own in the second period, until Szcepanski broke their back with the "dunk", that really ignited the Viking crowd as well as the team. That shot simply took the starch out of the Warriors, for in the next seven minutes the Warriors probably played the worst basketball in the tenure of Ken Ludwig at the helm of the Warriors. _ The final period saw the Warriors outscore the bikings 27 to 21, but it was not enough, and dropped the Warriors to 2 and 3, while Crown leads the pack with a 5 and 0 record and 12 and 1 on the season Bob Greve led all scorers with 22 points. both J and the Vikings emerged 10. Greve and Zeller took over for the Warriors in the second period and with their keen shooting the Warriors jumped out to a 37 to 33 half time margin. At 5:30 of the third period the Vikings tied it*at 39 all, and that was the closest they came the rest of the evening. Greve hit a 15 footer, Freund one from the corner, Greve and Costigan each hit and it looked as if the Warriors were off and running. However, the Vikes didn't give up and roared back to cut the deficit toa mere2 going into the final period. Joe Bauml's two charity tosses gave the Warriors a 57 to 50 margin at 6:45, and the rest of the evening Bob Zeller and Mike Burdgorf, along with Chris Freund ended the scoring for a nice victory 70 to 61. The win leaves the Warriors at 7 and 6 for the season. The Warriors got back to some offensive basketball Saturday night. True, the opposition was not as good as Crown, but nevertheless, it had to be rewarding for Ludwig to see the ball go through the hoop. Friday, the Warriors travel to Dundee for another Fox Valley game. "Just before halftime, we started to play aggressive defense using our full court press and they began to turn the ball over," coach Dan Stanowski said. Stanowski noted that at halftime, the Skyhawks adjusted their offense in order to get Dschida the ball in the corner. It proved successful as the senior popped in 13 of her 17 total in the second half. The Skyhawks cut the lead again to a 34-31 deficit after three periods and took the lead early in the final stanza as they ran away with the 8 point victory. "Sue Dehn played another outstanding defensive game to lead the teams' resurgance," Stanowski said. "I'm hoping she can continue to ' contribute offensively as she did tonight." Another key in the Skyhawk come back included a pick up in rebounding. After picking up only 14 rebounds in the first half the locals tallied 31 in the second half (16 on offense) to stay in the game. Besides Dehn with 18 and Dschida with 17, Cheri Kofier tallied 9, Tracey Esposito had 5 arid Kim Grenman had 2 to help the Johnsburg cause!
