Public education in this area is sorely needed and very timely. It is noteworthy that three of our local state legislators have decided to introduce and support legislation against the trap in Illinois. It is very important that the legislators (particularly Jill Zwick, who has especially requested this) receive letters from people who have had first-hand experiences with traps, such as their own animals being caught in them. - Several incidents have occurred just recently, though we don't usually think of this as "trapping season". (In upcoming columns, we will describe some of these accounts, and H P. would appreciate being apprised of such, as they occur.) Some other recent developments relating to the trap include: 1) Ordinances passed in Rock Island, 111. and Belleville, - III. prohibiting the use of the leghold trap in those municipalities : 2) A 4-year- old girl in Maryland touching the trigger of a steel-jaw trap, thereby crippling her hand so severely it cannot be surgically reconstructed: 3) A report by the Associated Humane Societies that the 1979 outbreak of rabies in Texas was directly at­ tributable to over-trapping of predators, leaving skunks (notorious rabies carriers) to proliferate Increased animal rabies is expected for the third consecutive year in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health, which also pinpoints the increased numbers of skunks as the greatest source of infection for domestic animals. We still have a fight on our hands, considering the money and power of many hunting, trapping and wildlife "management" groups, but a Yale research project, funded by the U S Department of the Interior, found that 78 percent of Americans are now opposed to the trap Further support for trap- banning legislation can be expressed by writing our federal senators Percy and Dixon and representative Martin in Washington. urging them to vote for H.R. 374, which would discourage trapping on a national level. The leghold trap is a right vs. wrong, not a "states' rights" issue, so please let these legislators know how you feel, and please let H P. know how they respond to you. The Woodstock Music Theatre festival and McHenry County college have joined together to create the Festival Theatre school The school will provide, students with the opportunity to learn basic performance and technical theatre skills. Designed, staffed, and taught by professionals, the Festival Theatre School will give participants a solid foun­ dation through instruction and experience in all areas of practical theatre work. The aim of the school is to" provide participants with the opportunity to become superior theatre artists, students, critics, or audience members at whatever level they choose to participate in the future. The program will run six weeks from June 8 through July 16. Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m Monday through Thursday. The morning classes will be held at McHenry County college, with transportation provided to the Woodstock Opera House for afternoon classes. To be rededicated and historically ptaqued, is the 1847 Luke Gannon log cabin now on museum grounds. The cabin has been restored inside and out with the help of volunteers and Historical society members throughout the county County, township and municipal officals will be honored at the same time for their participation in local historic preservation through their donations of Federal Revenue Sharing funds. On hand for the festivities will be Illinois Treasurer Jerome Consention; Richard Klemm. state representative of the 33rd Legislative district; and a quartet from Cary Grove high school consisting of Sue Boddy, Rich Wendorf. Janet Koch and Darwin Guenther under the direction of Dana Foloor. The Rev. Norman Meyer of St. John's Lutheran church of Union will give the dedication for the cabin. Refreshments will be served following the short ceremony and the museum will be open for tours. The public is cordially invited to attend the ceremony and visit the museum.
