/ Twice Told Tales I !™!™LS. THP Pitv of M n U o n r i FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 21. 1931) Memorial day will again be observed in McHenry and the people of the community will honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country. The memorial stone which has been erected by the local fortress of the Daughters of the G A R in memory of the Civil War veterans will be dedicated. The services will be in charge of the American I^egion and the G A R The high school orchestra returned from Cleveland tired but happy, even in the face of defeat. The trip was very much enjoyed by the 34 orchestra members who. knowing that they had honestly won at least second place by the judges but by disputes and penalties brought about by the body of six directors, had been eliminated, have displayed some very fine sport smanship in their evident lack of any hard feelings over the unfairness of the treatment they received at the national contest FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 22. 1941) Three soloists of the high school band and orchestra played in the regional contest held at Flint, Mich. Martin Baum took a first division rating with his baritone solo, thus making him the first student in the history of the school to take a first division at a national contest He had some sixteen competitors, but still came out on top. Gordon Scholle took a third division rating with his violin solo Earl Pomrening also took a third division with his baritone saxophone solo. Ground has been broken for a new home being erected for Joe May on a lot which he purchased from Ann Frisby on John street recently. ' TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 17, 1956) George Reik^r was among 128 Shriners to receive the Legion of Merit fez in a ceremonial at the Medinah Temple in Chicago. The presentation was in recognition for serving in the Oriental band for 21 years. Another 600 were initiated during the program. Last year Mr. Reiker was presented with a lifetime membership after 35 years as a member of the Shrine organization. Local civic, farm and church groups are represented on the McHenry county CROP board which was formed this month atp the McHenry county Farm Bureau building. William Pictor of McHenry was elected chairman of the board. The McHenry Shamrocks opened the Reason by traveling to Elgin, where they were defeated by the Elgin V F.W team 7 to I. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 19. 1971) The spirit of true camaraderie, tinged with a good bit of nostalgia, per meated the McHenry Country club's main dining room on the occasion of the city choral club's thirtieth . year anniversary party, and memories were extended far into the past as the program unfolded Norb Mauch. one of only two original mem bers who still belongs to the club, officiated as master of ceremonies. McHenry continued to rank third high in the county as Gov Richard B Ogilvie announced distribution of $8,891.214 86 to Illinois counties and municipal cities as their share of state income tax collected last month McHenry's share, based on population, was $30,751.56 behind Crystal I^ike with $70.730 84 and Woodstock with $49,783.56.
