Hoch, the Warrior's moet valuable player this season, played four matchee in the meet. "She is the kind of athlete every coach wants to have," said Hoch's mentor, Jean Natoli. "She would come to practice and work hereetf hard. All 1 had to do was show up." with her MVP Hoch received She Along award, citywide recognition was introduced at a McHenry City Council meeting and received a certificate from the Board of Education. Hoch, who also played at the state tournament last season, was seeded third in the area after a splendid regular season. She lost her first match at state, and moved into the consolation bracket. She won twice in that division before being eliminated. But she was still among the top 32 players in the state. Hoch's badminton career will continue past high school. She will play at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb next season. "Jean was scouted all season long, so it was not really a surprise," said Natoli. Mack Team Wins McHenry's American L e g i o n - C o n n i e M a c k baseball team began Its 1981 schedule by splitting a Connie Mack doubUheadw with Sycamore and dropping a heartbreaker to Crystal Lake. But the locals showed they should be a team to be reckoned with in the season ahead. Dave Smith and Keb Bowen drove in two runs each as McHenry nipped Sycamore 7-5 in die season opener. Smith and Joe Bauml had two hits apiece to back the pitching of Bowen. The victory wai a comeback effort, with' Sycamore Jumping off to a 4- 0 lead in the first frame. Two triples and three singles led to the Sycamore scoring in the opening inning. McHenry had only one baserunner in the first two innings, but exploded for six runs in the third. Dave Williams and Bob Greve walked before Bauml singled to fill the bases. Smith followed with a two- run single and Bowen doubled in two more. A fielder's choice scored Bowen with the final run in the inning. McHenry's final run scored in the fifth on a single by Bauml, a walk to Maurer, a single by Smith and Bowen's ground out. Bowen stopped Sycamore on only two hits over the last six innings. He eeeaped trouble in the third, fourth and seventh innings. The locals Were stopped cold for four innings in game two as Sycamore won the nightcap 5-2. McHenry had only three hits, singles by Maurer, Tim EvanSjpnd Bob Bryniartki. Evans and Bryniarski reached in the fifth, moved up on a series of wild pitches and eventually Sycamore touched Evans and Dave Colberg for eight hits. Their big inning was the third, when they scored three runs on a pair of doubles, three singles and a walk. A lack of offensive punch also hurt McHenry in its 3-0 American Legion loss to Crystal Lake. The hometowners managed only four hits - three of them off the bat of Maurer. Colberg was the losing pitcher but deserved a far better fate. The McHenry hurler scattered four hits, but was the victim of several defensive lapaes. After Scott Overby led off with a triple in the third, Colberg got one out on a liner to Bryniarski at short. Colberg hit the next batter with a pitch before an error allowed Overby to score. Crystal Lake's final runs scored in the fifth on another triple by Overby and three The team returns to action with a doubleheader at Rockford East Sunday, June 14. McHenry plays at its McCracken field home on Tuesday, June 16 with a 6 p.m. game against Belvidere. McHenry's team is coached by Russ Williams.
