The smash success of "Laverne and Shirley" and a bulging bankroll haven't done a thing to shore up Penny's shaky self-image. Her separation from "All In The Family's" Rob Reiner after nine years of marriage, like her fizzled romance with Art Garfunkel, was another in a series of bad jolts. "I just didn't hold up my part," Penny said sad ly. "We could check all the boxes in the stress test. His success, my success. Buying a house, building a house. There were never any fights or arguments, but we didn't seem to be connecting." Penny's lack of confidence dates from her teens when her plain-Jane looks were a source of constant concern and fretting. "It's not always easy for a woman not to be really glamorous," she once said to reporters. "These days, it seems that every other girl on the screen is a real knock-out with a great figure. I used to think that if you put on enough makeup you'd look like Candice Bergen. I guess I never put on enough makeup." TV BACKSTAGE: Fans of "Search for Tomorrow" wiH be getting a double treat during the month of July. During the serial's upcoming broadcasts of special sequences taped on location aboard the luxurious Queen Elizabeth II ocean liner (these, segments will air within regular episodes of the serial in mid-July), series star Sherry Mathis, who plays the glamorous Liza Sentell, will be wearing the latest fashion creations of famed designer Mary McFadden (who, coincidental^, will be a passenger on the Queen Elizabeth II while the sequences are being taped)... The casts of the CBS serials "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" are emerging from their studios for a little sports activity (all for charity, of course). On Saturday, June 27, teams representing these two serials will be playing against a team from "The Edge of Night" in Garden City Park in a softball game to benefit a charity called HAPPI (Help Autistic People Please, Inc.). The event is being sponsored by Adelphi University. TV CLOSEUP: Success hasn't spoiled the good ol' boys--and girl--in the high-riding CBS series "Dukes of Hazzard," but it sure brings its share of problems. With its almost permanent place right near the top of the TV ratings and a loyal audience of more than 40 million a week, there's little chance to escape the limelight. "None of us have nearly as much privacy as we might like," said John Schneider, who plays Bo Duke. And his cousin Luke, actor Tom Wopat, adds: "You make a lot of money, but you don't really have time to spend it. And when you do go out, you're surrounded by people want ing your autograph. I don't want to seem unkind to my fans--after all, they've helped put my career where it is today--but sometimes they do go overboard." Catherine Bach complains that a lot of her fan mail is "outspoken." Veteran actor Denver Pyle says: "I'm not the superstar that each of them is. They attract the frenzy, not me. The people who go for me are more settled in their ways- older, less excitable. I reap the advantages of success from "Dukes" without all the hassles others face."
